Your technical general study map
This is a preparation outline, not a replacement for the current licence-specific DGCA syllabus. Check the official syllabus before choosing chapters; CPL and ATPL requirements need not be identical.
Aerodynamics and performance
Lift, drag, stability, control, stalls and performance relationships. Identify what is held constant when a question changes one variable.
Airframes and systems
Structures, hydraulics, electrics, landing gear, flight controls, pressurisation and environmental systems. Follow an input through the system to its output.
Powerplant
Piston and gas-turbine principles, compressors, combustion, turbines, fuel, lubrication and indications. Keep cause and effect connected.
Instruments and indications
Pitot-static and gyro principles, instrument errors, displays and warning logic. Differentiate measured, derived and selected information.
Study a system in four passes
Example: a pitot-static instrument
Start with its input: pressure. Identify the mechanism that responds to that pressure, then the indication shown to the pilot. Finally, consider an error or failure and how it could change the indication.
Do not carry a fault rule from one instrument to another without tracing the actual inputs. For real operations, follow the aircraft's approved manuals and procedures.
Questions to ask while a diagram is on screen
- Where does the energy, signal or pressure enter?
- What physical quantity is actually being measured?
- Which part is a sensor, which is a display and which is a control?
- What assumption makes the normal explanation valid?
Practise this subject in BlueFlash
- Open Teach mode and choose an available Technical General book appropriate to your course.
- Work through the relevant chapter. Ask for the meaning of a term or why a mechanism works.
- Use Exam mode for a matching question bank. Explain the reasoning before looking at the answer.
- Return to the source when the explanation or rule needs verification.
Technical question practice
Use a focused practice routine and discuss incorrect answers.
