The rows are labelled down the left side by latitude. You'll see N72, then 70, 68, 66, 64, 62, 60, 58, 56, 54, 52, 50, 45, 40, 35, 30, 20, 10, and 0. These are degrees of latitude, from 72° North down to the Equator at 0°. So the table covers the Northern Hemisphere.
Here's how you read it. Pick your latitude row and your date column. Where they intersect is the time of morning civil twilight, in hours and minutes. For example, at N72 on December 30th, the time is 10 hours 49 minutes — that's 10:49. At the Equator, latitude 0, on December 30th, it's 05 hours 18 minutes — 05:18.
Now, let's look at the pattern, because that's the real lesson. At high latitudes — N72, N70 — the times are late in the morning, around 10:00 or 09:00. That's because in winter, at high northern latitudes, the sun rises very late, so civil twilight starts late. As you move south toward the Equator, the times get earlier — down to around 05:00 or 04:58.
Also watch the progression across the dates. At N72, December 30th is 10:49, and it gets earlier as you go through January and into February — 10:40, 10:31, 10:20, down to 07:32 by February 16th. That's the days lengthening as winter turns toward spring. At the Equator, the times stay much more constant — around 05:18 to 05:58 — because day length barely changes there.
One thing to note: the table is for the Northern Hemisphere, and it's for morning civil twilight specifically. There's a companion table for evening civil twilight, and for the Southern Hemisphere you'd use a different set. But for now, master this one: latitude on the left, date across the top, and the intersection gives you the time of morning civil twilight in hours and minutes.
