How do you organise sleep in that 16-hour window? Using Rule 3, divide those 16 hours by 3. 16 divided by 3 gives you 5 hours and 20 minutes of sleep required in that window. That sleep can be taken as a single block. Here's the schedule the book lays out. I'll walk through the table. First sleep: from 2100 local to 0220 local — that's 9 PM to 2:20 AM. On body clock time, that's 0200 to 0720 — because New York is 5 hours behind UTC, and London body clock is roughly UTC. During this sleep, the pilot accumulates 10 hours 40 minutes of sleep credits — that's the credit from the sleep itself, plus any carryover. Then awake: from 0220 local to 1300 local — 2:20 AM to 1 PM. Body clock time is 0720 to 1800. Sleep credits during this awake period are 0 — you're not sleeping, so you're spending down your credit. Second sleep: from 1300 local to 2100 local — 1 PM to 9 PM. Body clock time is 1800 to 0200. This sleep gives 16 hours of sleep credits — that's the 8 hours of sleep multiplied by 2, per Rule 1, and it's taken immediately before the duty day starts at 2100 local. The book lists advantages and disadvantages of this plan. Advantages: The second sleep will be of good quality because sleep credit is 0 going into it — you're genuinely tired — and your body temperature is decreasing for much of that time, which helps you fall and stay asleep. Also, there's only one disruption of sleep — you wake once, then stay awake until the second sleep. Disadvantages: The first sleep period will be of mixed quality. Even though you have 0 credit, your body temperature is on the rise for part of that time — body temperature naturally rises through the morning, which makes sleep lighter. Also, the awake period from 0220 to 1300 is unsociable — it's the middle of the night to early afternoon — and the temptation to sleep again before 1300 will be strong.
