I want to walk you through what this tells us about the structure of your Radio Navigation syllabus, because it's a map of everything we're about to cover. Look at the cluster of entries under "V" — this is the heart of the course. We have VHF, which stands for Very High Frequency, listed at page 8. That's the frequency band we'll start with. Then VHF Direction Finder at page 75 — that's a ground-based system that shows you the bearing of your aircraft from a station. And then the big one: VHF Omni-directional Range, or VOR, at page 111. That's the standard short-range navigation aid, and you'll see it referenced again at page 285. Now notice how the index breaks VOR down into its components. VOR Transmitter at page 112 — that's the ground station side. VOR Receiver at page 112 — that's your airborne equipment. You'll also see VORTAC at page 116 — that's a combined VOR and TACAN station, where TACAN is the military tactical air navigation system. And VOT at page 116 — that's a VOR test facility, used to check the accuracy of your receiver on the ground. Then there's the pairing with DME. VOR/DME at page 261 — that's the combined system giving you both bearing and distance. VOR/DME Frequency Pairing at page 250 — that's the standardised way the frequencies are matched so that when you tune the VOR, the DME is automatically set. And you'll see Figure 8.1 referenced at page 117, which shows a combined VOR/DME unit. Now look at the "W" section. Wavelength at page 6, Waves at page 5 — that's the physics foundation. Waveguide at pages 56 and 60 — that's the metal tube that carries the radio frequency energy from the transmitter to the antenna. WGS84 at page 306 — that's the World Geodetic System 1984, the standard coordinate reference frame used in navigation. And then the satellite navigation entries: WAAS at page 320 — that's the Wide Area Augmentation System. WADGNSS at page 305 — Wide Area Differential GNSS. WADGPS at page 321 — Wide Area Differential GPS. These are all augmentation systems that improve the accuracy of satellite navigation. Finally, VNAV at pages 268 and 277 — that's Vertical Navigation, the system that computes a vertical flight path. So this index is your syllabus map. Every one of these terms — VOR, VORTAC, VOT, VOR/DME, WAAS, WGS84 — is a system or concept we'll be studying in detail. The page numbers tell you where each one lives in the book, and the order of the chapters will take us from the basic physics of waves, through the VHF band, into the VOR system itself, and then on to the satellite-based navigation aids.
