Terrain that undulates fairly uniformly is difficult to use, because one ridge looks like the next; you need additional features to fix your position. Valleys, though, tend to be good visual navigation features. You can normally identify a valley from its orientation, and because they contain other cultural features—roads, railways, towns—they offer the opportunity for many precise checkpoints.
Next, towns and villages. I'm going to give you a regulatory limit here, and I want you to remember it exactly: never overfly built-up areas below 1000 ft AGL, or below a height from which you could glide clear of the built-up area in the event of an engine failure. So it's the higher of those two constraints that governs. That said, towns and villages are useful as general indicators of position—they tell you roughly where you are—and you can use them to locate more precise visual checkpoints. There's also a night-time distinction: towns are useful at night because they're normally well-lit, but the same is not true of villages. So at night, a village may not give you the visual cue you expect.
Finally, roads. Motorways and major roads can provide excellent check features by day and by night. Here's the key concept: even if there's no discernible checkpoint on the feature, the feature itself is a line feature. That means you can use it for a track check—confirming you're on your planned route—or for a timing and groundspeed check, by timing your passage between two points along it. And generally, precise checkpoints can be found at regular intervals along these features—crossroads, motorway junctions, and service stations. So the road gives you the line, and those features give you the exact fixes.
So the overall picture: water is low and often hidden, hills give you vertical extent but demand safety respect, towns give you a general fix by day and a light signature by night, and roads give you continuous line features with regular precise checkpoints.
