Now, some of these are electronic and computer terms. "BASIC" — page 310 — that's a programming language. "BINARY" — page 307 — the base-2 number system computers use. "BIOS" — page 309 — Basic Input Output System, the firmware that starts the computer. "BIT" — page 100 — and "BITE" — page 100 — Built in Test Equipment. That's the self-test system in the avionics. And "C++" — page 310 — another programming language.
I also want to highlight "Bimetallic strip" — page 26. That's a temperature-sensing element made of two different metals bonded together — they expand at different rates when heated, which bends the strip. And "Bleed Air" — page 29 — that's compressed air tapped from the engine compressor section, used for various pneumatic systems.
Now, a few of these are worth special attention because they're common in the exam. "Calibrated Airspeed (CAS)" — page 42. That's indicated airspeed corrected for instrument and installation errors. "Capsule" — page 41 — that's the aneroid capsule inside the altimeter that expands and contracts with pressure. "Caging Device" — page 156 — that's the mechanism that locks a gyroscope in place. "Cable Length Compensation" — page 267 — that's correcting for resistance in the wiring of a remote-reading instrument.
And I want to point out "Bounded Errors" — page 238. That's a specific type of error — one that stays within a defined limit, it doesn't grow without bound. And "Blockages" — page 86 — and "Blockages and Leaks" — page 65 — those are failure conditions in the pitot-static system.
