This is the index of your ATPL Instrumentation manual — the table of contents. I want to walk you through how to read it, because it tells you exactly what we're going to cover and where. Look at the structure. Each entry is a technical term followed by a page number. That page number is where that topic is explained in the book. So when you see "Autothrottle System . . . 391," that means the full discussion of the autothrottle system starts on page 391. The dots are just leaders — they guide your eye from the term to the page number. Let me point out some of the key terms you'll be learning. Under the letter A, we have "Autothrottle Disengage Switches" on page 395, and "Autothrottle Disengage Light" on page 396. These are part of the autothrottle system — the automatic throttle control that maintains your selected speed. The disengage switches and light are the crew interface for turning that system off and seeing its status. We also have "Avionics Bay" on page 8 — that's the compartment where the avionics equipment is installed. And "Azimuth" on page 214 — that's a navigation term, the angular measurement in the horizontal plane. Related to it is "Azimuth Misalignment" on page 238, which is an error condition we'll study. Moving to B, we have "Back Scattering" on page 257 — that's a radar term, the reflection of energy back toward the source. "Ball-in-tube Inclinometer" on page 187 — that's the instrument that shows your slip or skid, the ball in a curved glass tube. "Bank Angle" on page 416 — the angle of the aircraft's roll about its longitudinal axis. We also have "Barometric Error" on page 61 — that's an altimeter error caused by non-standard pressure. "Bars" on page 42 — that's a unit of pressure, and also refers to the pointer bars on flight instruments. "Basic T" on page 5 — that's the standard arrangement of the six primary flight instruments. Now, some of these are computer terms. "BASIC" on page 310 is a programming language. "BINARY" on page 307 is the base-2 number system computers use — ones and zeros. "BIOS" on page 309 stands for Basic Input Output System — that's the firmware that initializes the hardware. "C++" on page 310 is another programming language. These are all part of the digital computer section of the book. We also have "BIT" on page 100 and "BITE" on page 100 — those are the same thing. BITE stands for Built-in Test Equipment. That's the self-test capability of avionics systems. "Bleed Air" on page 29 — that's compressed air tapped from the engine compressor section, used for various pneumatic systems. We have "Blockages" on page 86 and "Blockages and Leaks" on page 65 — those are fault conditions in the pitot-static system. "Blue Radial Line" on page 45 — that's a speed marking on the airspeed indicator. "Boiling Point" on page 122 — that's the temperature at which a liquid turns to vapor, relevant to temperature measurement. "Boundary Layer" on page 14 — that's the thin layer of air adjacent to the aircraft surface. "Bounded Errors" on page 238 — that's a type of navigation error. "BRT" on pages 284 and 286 — that stands for Brightness, a control on the display. "B-type" on page 119 — that's a type of thermocouple. "Caging Device" on page 156 — that's a mechanism to lock a gyroscope. "Calibrated Airspeed" on page 42 — that's indicated airspeed corrected for instrument and position error. "Calibration" on page 34 — that's the process of adjusting an instrument to a standard. And "Capsule" on page 41 — that's the aneroid capsule inside an altimeter that expands and contracts with pressure. So this index is your map. Every one of these terms is a topic we'll cover in detail. When you see a term you don't recognize, that's fine — that's what we're here to learn. The page numbers let you jump to the exact spot when you need to review. That's the structure of the index.
