
This is the index of the powerplant volume of your Aircraft General Knowledge series. I want to walk you through it, because an index is a map of the entire book, and it tells you exactly what you're going to be responsible for knowing.
Let's start with the V entries. We have the V Engine on page 13. That's a cylinder arrangement where the cylinders are set at an angle to each other in a V shape, like a car engine. Then we have Velocity on page 9, which is simply speed in a given direction, and Volume on page 9 as well. These are fundamental physical quantities you'll use throughout.
Next, the Venturi Principle on page 104 and the Venturi Tube on page 6. A venturi tube is a tube that narrows in the middle. The principle is that as the air speeds up through that narrow section, its pressure drops. This is the basis for how carburettors and some fuel systems work, so it's a big one.
Now, the fuel-related terms. Volatility on page 78 — that's how readily a fuel evaporates. Vapour locks on page 84 — that's when fuel vaporizes in the fuel line and blocks the flow, which is a problem you need to understand. And the Vaporizing Tube System on page 259, which is a fuel system design that uses heat to vaporize the fuel.
Moving to the engine's valve train. We have the Valve Seat on page 28, Valve Springs on page 28, and the Valve Tip on page 28. The valve seat is the surface the valve closes against. The valve springs hold the valves closed. And the valve tip is the end of the valve that the rocker arm pushes on. These are all part of how the engine breathes.
Now, ignition and timing. Variable Ignition Timing on page 79 — that's when the ignition point is adjusted based on engine conditions. And Variable Inlet Guide Vanes on page 231, plus Variable Stator Vanes on page 232. These are on gas turbine engines. Inlet guide vanes direct air into the compressor, and stator vanes straighten the airflow between compressor stages. Both can be made variable to improve efficiency across the engine's operating range.
Then we have the Variable Pitch (Constant Speed) Propellers on page 167. That's a propeller where the blade angle can be changed in flight to maintain a constant RPM regardless of throttle setting. That's a key propeller concept.
Now, the lubricants. Viscosity on page 48 — that's a fluid's resistance to flow, its thickness. And the Viscosity Index on page 48 — that's a measure of how much the viscosity changes with temperature. A high viscosity index means the oil stays stable across temperatures.
Next, the electrical and mechanical terms. Voltage on page 60 — that's electrical pressure. Watt on page 21 — that's the unit of power. Work on page 4 and Work Done on page 9 — work is force applied over a distance. And Volumetric Efficiency on page 22 — that's how completely the cylinders fill with air on the intake stroke.
Now, the W entries. Wastegate on page 138 and Wastegate Position on page 140. The wastegate is a valve that controls how much exhaust gas goes to the turbocharger turbine. Its position determines boost pressure. That's a supercharging and turbocharging concept.
Then we have Water on page 58 and Water Drains on page 368. Water in fuel is a contamination issue, and water drains are the points where you drain it off. Waxing on page 369 — that's when fuel gets waxy and thick in cold temperatures, which can block filters. Wear on page 43 — that's the gradual loss of material from moving parts.
Now, the engine operation terms. Wet Start on page 359 — that's when fuel has accumulated in the engine and it starts with excess fuel, which can cause a hot start or a fire. Wet Sump on page 43 — that's an oil system where the oil is stored in a sump at the bottom of the engine. And White Smoke on page 95 — that's an exhaust indication, often from burning oil or coolant.
Finally, the big one: the Working Cycle of the Gas Turbine Engine on page 201. That's the sequence of intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust that a gas turbine goes through. That's the heart of jet propulsion.
So, that's the index. It's a map of everything from basic physics like velocity and work, through piston engine components like valves and the V engine, to gas turbine systems like variable vanes and the working cycle. You'll be covering all of this in detail as we go through the book.
