
We're starting a new part of the book now — the Index. This is the map of the entire Air Law syllabus, and I want to walk you through what it tells us before we dive into the chapters themselves.
Look at the very first entries. We have "45°/180° Procedure Turn" on page 181, and "80°/260° Procedure Turn" on page 182. These are instrument approach manoeuvres — when you're flying a procedure turn, you're essentially reversing your heading to align with the inbound course. The numbers tell you the angles of the turns involved. The 45°/180° is the classic teardrop pattern, and the 80°/260° is the sharper alternative. Both are standard ways to position yourself for an approach when you're flying instrument procedures.
Right below that, we have the "45-Day rule" on page 82. This is a currency requirement — it's about how recently you must have done something to remain legal to carry passengers. The 45-day window is a specific regulatory limit you'll need to track as a professional pilot.
Now, moving into the "A" section. We have three transponder codes: A/7500, A/7600, and A/7700, all on page 248. These are the emergency squawk codes you set on your transponder. A/7500 is the hijack code — unlawful interference. A/7600 is radio failure — you've lost two-way communication. A/7700 is general emergency — any situation that threatens the safety of the flight. These are critical memory items. When you set one of these, air traffic control immediately knows your situation without you saying a word.
Then we have "Accident" on page 487. In air law, this is a precisely defined term — it's not just any incident. An accident is a specific occurrence involving an aircraft, and the definition matters because it triggers mandatory reporting and investigation obligations. We'll get into the exact wording later.
"Advisory Airspace" on page 260 and "Advisory Service" on page 339 — these are related but distinct. Advisory airspace is a defined area where an advisory service is provided, but it's not controlled airspace. The service gives you information and recommendations, but you're not under positive control — the controller is advising, not directing.
"Aerodrome Beacon" on page 420 — that's the rotating light at an aerodrome that helps you identify it from the air at night. "Aerodrome Control Service" on page 273 is the air traffic control service for aerodrome traffic — that's the tower. "Aerodrome obstacles" on page 439 are the physical obstructions around the field that affect your take-off and landing performance calculations.
Now, the aerodrome reference items. "Aerodrome Reference Code" on page 370 — this is a coding system that classifies an aerodrome based on its physical characteristics, and it determines what aircraft can operate there. "Aerodrome Reference Field Length" on page 371 — this is the minimum runway length required for the critical aircraft type. "Aerodrome Reference Point" on page 374 — that's the designated geographical position of the aerodrome, usually the centre of the runway system. And "Aeronautical Part" on page 370 — that's a component of the aerodrome reference code system.
"Aeronautical Beacons" on page 420 — these are ground-based lights that help you navigate, distinct from the aerodrome beacon. Then we have the documentation chain: "Aeronautical Information Circulars (AICs)" on page 352, and the "Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP)" on page 352. The AIP is the primary document for permanent aeronautical information, and AICs are the circulars that carry supplementary or temporary information.
"Aeroplane Class Ratings" on page 75 — this is about the type of licence endorsement you need for different classes of aeroplane. "Aeroplane search procedure checklist" on page 476 — that's the systematic procedure for searching for a missing aircraft.
"Aiming Point Marking" on page 397 — that's the visual marking on the runway that tells you where to aim your landing. Then we have "AIP Amendments" on page 354 and "AIP Supplements" on page 352. Amendments are permanent changes to the AIP, while supplements are temporary changes. And "AIRAC" on page 354 — that's the Aeronautical Information Regulation and Control system, which sets the fixed dates when aeronautical information changes take effect, so everyone is synchronised.
"Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS)" on page 249 — that's the on-board system that monitors transponder signals from other aircraft and gives you resolution advisories to avoid collisions. "Aircraft Lights" on page 104 — the external lighting requirements. "Aircraft Markings" on page 64 — the nationality and registration marks on the aircraft.
"Aircraft proximity reports (AIRPROX)" on page 281 — that's the formal report filed when two aircraft come closer than they should. "Aircraft Stand Markings" on page 402 — the markings on the apron that guide you into parking position. And "AIREP" — that's the air report, the in-flight weather and operational report you send to ATC.
So this index is your roadmap. Every one of these entries is a topic we're going to cover in depth. The page numbers tell you exactly where to find each one. As we work through the chapters, you'll see these terms come up again and again — and by the end, you'll know each one cold.
