
We're starting a new part of the book now — the index. This is the map of the whole volume, and it's a goldmine for us because it tells you exactly where every concept lives. Let me walk you through this slice of it.
We begin with the letter C. First up, the Control Display Unit, on page 270. That's the panel in the cockpit you use to type in and manage navigation data — think of it as the keyboard and screen for your flight management system.
Then the Control Segment, pages 307 and 310. That's the ground-based part of the GPS system — the stations on Earth that monitor and command the satellites.
Next, Control Zones, page 184. Those are the airspace volumes around an airport where air traffic control has authority over you.
Then we have Cosecant Squared, page 211. That's an antenna pattern shape — the beam is shaped so that the signal strength stays roughly constant as the ground distance increases. It's used in radar to give uniform coverage.
The Course Deviation Bar, pages 125 and 126 — that's the vertical needle on your instrument that shows left or right of your selected course. And closely related, the Course Deviation Indicator, page 155 — that's the whole instrument, the CDI, which displays that bar.
The Course Selector Knob, page 119 — that's the knob you turn to set the desired course into the instrument.
Then the Critical Angle, page 27. That's the angle of incidence beyond which a radio wave is no longer refracted back to Earth but passes through the ionosphere — it's a boundary condition for skywave propagation.
Crosswind, page 92 — the wind component blowing across your track, not along it.
Cruise, page 276, and its abbreviation CRZ, also page 276 — that's the phase of flight at constant altitude between climb and descent.
CVOR, page 116 — that stands for Conventional VOR, the standard VHF omnidirectional range, as opposed to the Doppler VOR.
Now we move to the letter D. DAPS, page 237 — that's the Departure and Approach Procedures, the standard routes for leaving and entering the terminal area.
Data Link, page 234 — that's the digital communication system between the aircraft and the ground, sending messages and clearances electronically.
DBVORTAC, page 116 — that's a Doppler VOR combined with a TACAN, giving you both VOR azimuth and distance measuring in one facility.
Dead Space, page 27 — that's the region where a radio signal is too weak to be received, often directly over a transmitter or in a shadow zone.
Dead Time, page 187 — that's the brief interval after a transmitter sends a pulse during which it cannot receive — it's "dead" to incoming signals.
Decision Height, page 147 — that's the altitude on an approach at which you must decide to continue or execute a missed approach.
Descent, page 277 — the phase of flight where you lose altitude.
Designated Operational Coverage, abbreviated DOC, pages 98, 116, and 251 — that's the officially published area within which a navigation aid guarantees its specified performance.
Desired Track, page 261 — that's the planned path over the ground you intend to fly.
DGPS, page 319, and its full name Differential GPS, also page 319 — that's a technique that uses a ground reference station to correct GPS errors, giving you much higher accuracy.
Dilution of Precision, page 318 — that's a measure of how the satellite geometry affects the accuracy of your position fix. Poor geometry gives a high dilution and worse accuracy.
Directivity, pages 20 and 58 — that's the property of an antenna that concentrates its radiated energy in a particular direction.
Directors, page 58 — those are the antenna elements that steer or shape the beam.
Distance Measuring Equipment, abbreviated DME, pages 148, 184, and 243 — that's the system that measures slant range from the aircraft to a ground beacon.
Then we have the D-layer, page 25 — that's the lowest layer of the ionosphere, which absorbs high-frequency signals during the day.
And finally, DME again, pages 148, 149, and 17 — that's the same Distance Measuring Equipment, and you'll see it referenced repeatedly because it's so central to navigation.
