This is the index of the book — the "T" section, to be precise. I want to walk you through what this tells you about the structure of the whole syllabus, because an index is a map of what you're about to learn. Look at the entries here. You've got the temperature and airspeed family first: Total Air Temperature, abbreviated TAT, on pages 30 and 31, with its Total Air Temperature Probe on page 28. Then Total Pressure on page 13, and Total Ram Rise on page 30. These are all part of the air data system — the pitot-static instruments that feed your airspeed indicator and altimeter. Then you move into the navigation and flight control territory. Touch Control Steering (TCS) on page 373 — that's an autopilot feature. Track Angle Error and Track Keeping Error, both on page 243 — those are navigation terms, the difference between where you're heading and where you're actually going. Now the safety systems: Traffic Advisories on page 483, and the Traffic Alert Collision Avoidance System, which is TCAS, on pages 311 and 479. That's the system that warns you about other aircraft nearby. You'll also see Transducer on pages 17 and 354 — that's a device that converts one form of energy into another, like pressure into an electrical signal. Transponder on pages 97 and 480 — that's the equipment that replies to radar interrogations with your aircraft's identity and altitude. There's a cluster of gyroscopic terms here: Transport Compensation on page 257, Transport Rate Compensation on page 235, and Transport Wander on pages 142, 144, 156, 163, and 240. These are all errors and corrections in gyro instruments — the effects of the Earth's rotation and your movement over it. Trihedron on page 258 is a three-axis reference frame. Tuned Rotor on page 145 is a gyro design detail. Then the flight instruments: True Airspeed (TAS) on page 43, True Altitude on page 54, Turn and Slip Displays on page 189, Turn Co-ordinator on page 195, Turn Indicator on page 185, and Turning Errors on pages 127, 130, 132, and 176 — those are the errors you get in compasses and gyros during turns. Finally, Trim on page 361, Turbulence on page 397, TURBULENCE MODE on page 292 — that's an autopilot mode for rough air — and Transparency on page 122, which relates to instrument displays. The entry cuts off at Two Levelling Switch — that's a gyro erection mechanism, but the page number is cut off in this excerpt. So what's the big picture? This index shows you the three pillars of instrumentation: air data (temperature, pressure, airspeed), gyroscopics (wander, compensation, turning errors), and the electronic systems (TCAS, transponder, autopilot modes). Every one of these terms will come back as a full lesson. This is your roadmap.
