We're looking at the letter 'P' and into 'Q' and 'R' entries. Let me take you through each one so you know what these terms mean and where they sit in the course.
First, Positioning — this refers to the movement of an aircraft without passengers or cargo, typically to reposition it for the next flight. You'll find that on page 106.
Position Reports are the regular radio calls you make to air traffic control, telling them your exact location, altitude, and estimated time to the next point. That's on page 133.
Power to Inspect — this is a legal authority. It means that certain officials, like aviation authority inspectors, have the right to examine an aircraft, its documents, and its crew at any time. That's on page 16.
Precautionary Landing — this is a landing you initiate when a situation is not an emergency but you decide it's safer to land early rather than continue. It's not a forced landing; it's a deliberate, cautious decision. Page 204.
Precision Approach — this is an instrument approach that provides both lateral and vertical guidance, like an ILS (Instrument Landing System). That's on page 62.
Preferred Route Message — this is a message you send to air traffic control requesting a specific route that you'd like to fly, often to save time or fuel. Page 124.
Pre-flight and In-flight Procedures — these are the checklists and actions you perform before you start the engines and while you're airborne. Page 138.
Pressurization Failure — this is a critical emergency where the cabin pressure is lost, requiring you to don oxygen masks and descend to a safe altitude. Page 171.
Prestwick — this is a major air traffic control centre in Scotland, part of the UK's air navigation service. Page 120.
PRMs — this stands for Preferred Routes Messages. You'll see it referenced on pages 15, 42, and 124. It's the same concept as the Preferred Route Message we just covered.
Procedures — this is a broad heading covering all the standard operating procedures you'll follow. Page 35.
Protective Breathing Equipment — this is the equipment, like smoke hoods or oxygen masks, that protects your airway in a smoke or fume event. Pages 86 and 163.
Public Address — the PA system in the cabin that you use to communicate with passengers. Page 81.
Moving into 'Q':
Quality Manager — this is the person responsible for overseeing the airline's quality system, ensuring standards are maintained. Page 11.
Quality System — this is the formal set of policies, processes, and procedures that ensure an airline operates safely and consistently. Pages 11, 24, and 105.
Now into 'R':
Radio Failure — this is when you lose communication with air traffic control. You have specific procedures to follow, which you'll learn on page 134.
Rain — this is a weather condition that affects visibility, runway conditions, and aircraft performance. Page 146.
Random Routes — these are routes that are not on a fixed, published airway system, often used in oceanic or remote airspace. Pages 123 and 125.
Rapid or Explosive Decompression — this is a sudden, violent loss of cabin pressure, more severe than a slow pressurization failure. Page 171.
Recent Experience — this refers to the regulatory requirement that you must have flown a certain number of takeoffs and landings within a recent period to carry passengers. Pages 94, 98, and 104.
Recurrent Training — this is the regular, periodic training you must complete to maintain your licence and type rating. Pages 96 and 104.
Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM) — this is a system that allows aircraft to fly with only 1,000 feet vertical separation between flight levels 290 and 410, instead of the standard 2,000 feet. It requires special equipment and approval. Pages 25 and 40.
Refuelling — the process of adding fuel to the aircraft, with specific safety procedures. Page 45.
Request Clearance — this is the action of asking air traffic control for permission to proceed along your planned route. Page 133.
Required Navigation Performance (RNP) — this is a specification that defines how accurately your aircraft must be able to navigate in a given airspace. Page 120.
Required RVR/Visibility — RVR stands for Runway Visual Range. This is the minimum visibility or RVR value required for a particular approach or takeoff. Page 58.
Rest Period — this is the legally mandated time off you must have between duty periods to ensure you're fit to fly. Pages 106 and 107.
Revised Clearance — this is an updated or changed clearance from air traffic control, which you must read back and confirm. Page 137.
Revised Estimate — this is an updated estimated time of arrival or time over a waypoint that you send to ATC when your original estimate changes. Page 134.
And finally, Reykj — this is the start of 'Reykjavik', which is the air traffic control centre in Iceland, a critical point for North Atlantic crossings.
