I want to walk you through a portion of the index from your Operational Procedures manual. This is the part of the book that lists topics alphabetically and tells you which page to turn to for each one. Since you're starting from zero knowledge, I'll explain each entry as we go. We begin with Flights Over Water on page 79. That section covers the rules and procedures you need to follow when operating an aircraft over water — things like life rafts, life jackets, and ditching procedures. Next is Flight Time on page 4. This defines what counts as flight time for logging purposes — typically from the moment the aircraft first moves under its own power for the purpose of flight until it comes to rest after landing. Then we have Flight Visibility on page 66. This is the visibility that you, the pilot, can see forward from the flight deck in flight. It's a critical value for takeoff and approach minima. Moving on, Fog appears on page 146, and immediately below it, Freezing Fog on the same page. Fog is a cloud of water droplets at or near the surface that reduces visibility below 1000 metres. Freezing fog is the same phenomenon but the water droplets are supercooled — they freeze on contact with surfaces, creating ice accretion on the airframe and runway. Freezing Rain is also on page 146. This is rain that falls as liquid but freezes on impact with cold surfaces, forming a clear ice coating. It's a serious hazard for aircraft on the ground and in flight. Frost on page 146 as well — that's ice crystals that form directly from water vapour on surfaces that are below freezing. Frost on wings disrupts airflow and must be removed before takeoff. Fuel Jettison on page 213 covers the systems and procedures for dumping fuel in flight, usually to reduce landing weight below maximum landing weight in an emergency. Fuel Policy on page 42 is about the regulations governing how much fuel you must carry — including taxi fuel, trip fuel, contingency fuel, alternate fuel, final reserve fuel, and extra fuel. Fuses on page 83 — these are electrical circuit protection devices in the aircraft, often found in older aircraft designs. Now we move into the G section. Galley Equipment on page 43 covers the appliances and systems in the aircraft galley — ovens, coffee makers, and their securing procedures. Gander on page 120 — this is a location reference, likely Gander, Newfoundland, a key North Atlantic waypoint and alternate airport for ETOPS operations. GLS on page 62 — that stands for GBAS Landing System, a precision approach system using ground-based augmentation of GPS signals to guide the aircraft to the runway. GNSS on page 139 — Global Navigation Satellite System, the umbrella term for satellite navigation systems like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou. GNSS (GPS) on page 122 — this is the specific implementation of GNSS using the US Global Positioning System, used for area navigation. GPS on page 113 — the Global Positioning System itself, the US satellite constellation providing position, velocity, and time information. GPWS on page 81 — Ground Proximity Warning System, which alerts you if the aircraft is in dangerous proximity to terrain. Grid Navigation on pages 113 and 114 — a navigation technique used in polar regions where lines of longitude converge, so you use a grid reference system aligned with the Greenwich meridian instead of true north. Ground and Refresher Training on page 96 — the recurrent training requirements for flight crew, including simulator sessions and emergency procedure drills. Ground Fog on page 146 — fog that forms close to the ground, usually less than 2 metres thick, often in low-lying areas. Ground Operations Manager on page 24 — the person responsible for coordinating ground handling activities at the airport. Ground Proximity Detection on page 46 — a system that detects the aircraft's proximity to the ground, often a precursor to or component of GPWS. Ground Proximity Warning on page 81 — the warning function itself, which is the output of the GPWS system. Now into H. Halon 1211 on pages 160 and 161 — a clean-agent fire extinguishing agent used in hand-held fire extinguishers, effective on Class A, B, and C fires but being phased out due to environmental concerns. Hand-held Fire Extinguishers on page 160 — the portable fire extinguishers carried in the cabin and flight deck. Harnesses on page 83 — the seat restraint systems for crew and passengers, including lap belts and shoulder harnesses. Headsets on page 81 — the communication headsets worn by flight crew for radio and intercom use. Head-up display on page 56 — a transparent display that projects flight information into your forward field of view so you don't have to look down at the instruments.
