This is the index of the book — the alphabetical listing of every topic inside, with the page numbers where each one appears. I want to walk you through what this index is telling you, because it's actually a map of the whole syllabus you're about to learn. Look at the first entry: "ice Unit (ATSU) . . . . . . . . . . 319." That's the Air Traffic Services Unit — the ground-based communication system that links the aircraft to air traffic control. It's on page 319. Here's the key thing about an index: it's not just a list, it's a cross-reference tool. Page 42 is probably the basic definition, page 53 might be altimeter errors, and page 293 could be in the flight management system section. Same word, different meanings depending on where you are in the book. Now look at the computer-related entries. "ALU . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 308" — that's the Arithmetic Logic Unit, the part of a computer that does the actual calculations. "ALGOL . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 310" — that's a programming language, one of the earliest ones. You can see the whole chapter structure just from the index. Notice the distinction between "Analogue" on page 7 and "Analogue Computers" on page 307. Page 7 is the very beginning of the book, where they introduce the concept of analogue versus digital signals. Page 307 is where they go deep into how analogue computers actually work. The index shows you the progression — you learn the basics first, then the advanced material later. Now the flight instruments. "Angle of Attack Probes . . . . . . . . . . . . 445" and "Angle of Attack Indicators . . . . . . . . . . 446" — these are the sensors on the outside of the aircraft that measure the angle between the wing and the oncoming air, and the cockpit displays that show the pilot. "Alpha (α) Angle . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 444" — that's the Greek letter alpha, the symbol used for angle of attack. "AoA . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 444" — that's the abbreviation. So you've got the full name, the symbol, and the abbreviation all listed, all pointing to the same pages 444-446. And "Angle of Attack Sensing . . . . . . . . . . . . . 444" — that's the whole system that measures it. These are all part of the same chapter on angle of attack, and the index groups them alphabetically but they're all on the same few pages. Here's something interesting: "Alternate Static Source . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18" — that's the backup static pressure port, used if the primary one ices up. It's on page 18, very early in the book, in the pitot-static system chapter. And "Altimeter Errors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 61" — that's later, page 61, where they discuss what happens when the altimeter reads wrong. Different topics, but both about the same underlying instrument. Now look at the autopilot entries. "Altitude Acquire . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 344" and "Altitude Acquire (ALT ACQ) . . . . . . . . . . 370" — same function, two different page numbers. That's because the autopilot chapter covers it on page 344, and then the flight management system chapter covers it again on page 370, with the abbreviation ALT ACQ. Same for "Altitude Hold . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 344" and "Altitude Hold (ALT HLD) . . . . . . . . . . . . 370" — the autopilot mode that keeps the aircraft at a constant altitude, again with its abbreviation. And "Altitude Alerting System . . . . . . . . . . . . 439" — that's the system that warns the pilot when the aircraft is approaching or deviating from a selected altitude. That's a separate chapter, page 439, and it's a different system from the autopilot altitude hold. Here's the thing I want you to take away from this index. When you're studying for the ATPL, you don't read this book front to back like a novel. You use the index to find specific topics, to cross-reference between chapters, and to check that you've covered everything. If you see "Altitude" listed on three different pages, you know you need to understand it in three different contexts. If you see "AoA" and "Alpha (α) Angle" both pointing to page 444, you know they're the same thing, just different names. The index also shows you the breadth of the syllabus. You've got communications on page 319, computers on page 307, flight instruments on page 444, autopilot on page 344, pitot-static on page 18. That's the full scope of the instrumentation and navigation course — and this index is your roadmap through all of it. One more thing to notice: "All Weather Operations . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 386" and "AOC Data Link Messages . . . . . . . . . . . . . 321" — AOC is Airline Operational Control, the data link messages between the aircraft and the airline's ground operations. These are the modern digital communication systems, and they're taught right alongside the traditional voice communications. The index shows you that this book covers both the old and the new. So when you're studying, use this index as your checklist. Every entry is a topic you need to master. Every page number is where you'll find it. And when you see the same topic on multiple pages, that's your cue that it's important enough to be covered in more than one context. That's how you know what to focus on.
