I want to walk you through the entry sectors for holding patterns. This is where we take the holding pattern itself — that racetrack shape you already know — and figure out how to actually get into it, depending on which direction you're coming from. The core idea is simple. There are three methods of joining a holding pattern, and which one you use is based entirely on the heading of the aircraft as it approaches the holding fix. That heading places you in one of three sectors, and each sector has its own specific procedure. Between each sector there's a 5° flexibility area on either side of the defining heading, and within that zone the pilot has the choice of which joining procedure to apply. So it's not a hard knife-edge boundary — you get a little latitude. Let me give you the exact headings, because these are the numbers you'll be tested on. The inbound holding track is 310° magnetic. That's the direction you fly toward the fix on the inbound leg. The reciprocal — the outbound track — is 130° magnetic. Now, the three sector boundaries: Sector 1 is defined by the inbound heading of 310° magnetic. Sector 2 is defined by 70° magnetic. And Sector 3 is defined by 240° magnetic. Each of those has its plus-or-minus 5° latitude. Now, for ease of definition, all three entry procedures I'm about to describe relate to a standard pattern, which is a right-hand pattern — meaning you turn right to fly the holding racetrack. Let's start with Sector 1, the Parallel Entry. Having reached the fix, you turn left onto an outbound heading to make good a track that is reciprocal to the stated inbound holding track. So you're flying outbound, parallel to the inbound track but in the opposite direction — that's why it's called a parallel entry. You maintain that outbound heading for the appropriate period of time relating to the altitude of the aircraft. Then you turn left again to return to the fix. On the second time over the fix, you turn right to follow the holding pattern. So the sequence is: left turn outbound, hold the time, left turn back to the fix, then right turn to join the racetrack. Now Sector 2, the Offset Entry. Having reached the fix, you turn onto the heading to make good a track that diverges 30° left of the reciprocal of the inbound holding track. So instead of flying exactly reciprocal, you offset it by 30° to the left. You maintain that for the appropriate period of time relating to altitude, then you turn right onto the holding track to return to the fix. On the second time over the fix, you turn right to follow the holding pattern. So the offset entry is: turn outbound on a track 30° left of reciprocal, hold the time, turn right onto the holding track back to the fix, then turn right to join the pattern. And Sector 3, the Direct Entry — this is the simplest. Having reached the fix, you simply turn right to follow the holding pattern. No outbound leg, no offset — you just turn directly into the racetrack. One thing I want to make sure you carry away: in every case, the outbound leg is maintained for the appropriate period of time relating to the altitude of the aircraft. That's the timing element — higher altitude means a longer outbound leg, because the wind and groundspeed effects differ. And in all three entries, once you're established in the pattern, the turns are right-hand, consistent with the standard pattern. So the three sectors give you three distinct ways in: parallel for Sector 1, offset for Sector 2, direct for Sector 3 — each triggered by your approach heading to the fix, with that 5° flexibility band between sectors giving you the choice when you're near a boundary.
