
Let’s pick up with the glossary terms starting with the letter V. I’ll walk you through each one.
First, Ventricles. These are the two largest and most muscular divisions of the heart. The left ventricle, when it contracts, sends blood around the entire body — that’s the systemic circulation. The right ventricle passes blood from the heart to the lungs to be recharged with oxygen — that’s the pulmonary circulation. So both are powerful pumping chambers, but each has a different destination for the blood it pushes.
Next, the Vestibular Apparatus. This is the combination of the semicircular canals and the otoliths — those are structures inside your inner ear. The function of the vestibular apparatus is to provide data to the brain that enables it both to maintain a model of spatial orientation and to control other systems that need this information. In other words, it tells your brain which way is up, whether you’re turning, and helps coordinate balance and movement. For a pilot, this is critical — and it’s also the source of some illusions when the information doesn’t match what your eyes see.
Then we have the Visual Cortex. That is the part of the brain which receives the electrical charges from the optic nerve of the eye. So the eye captures light and converts it into nerve signals, and those signals travel along the optic nerve to the visual cortex, where they are processed into the images you perceive.
Next, Visual Field — this comprises both central and peripheral vision. Central vision is what you use to focus directly on an object, like reading an instrument. Peripheral vision is everything around the edges of your field of view, which is especially important for detecting movement or changes outside your direct focus.
Then the Visual Perception Cascade. This is the reaction time from visual input, through brain reaction, perception, to recognition. In perfect conditions this takes approximately one second. So from the moment light hits your eye to the moment you actually recognise what you’re seeing, about a second passes — even under ideal circumstances. That’s a key number to remember when you think about how quickly you can respond to something you see in the cockpit or outside.
Finally, Vigilance (state of) . This is defined as the degree of activation of the central nervous system. It can vary from deep sleep to extreme alertness. So vigilance isn’t just being awake — it’s a scale of how ready your nervous system is to detect and respond to stimuli. For a pilot, maintaining an appropriate state of vigilance is essential for safe decision-making and reaction times.
