Class B compartments have four requirements. First, there must be sufficient access provided while in flight to enable a crew member to move by hand all of the contents, and to reach effectively all parts of the compartment with a hand-held extinguisher. So the crew can physically get in there and fight the fire directly. Second, when those access provisions are being used, no hazardous quantity of smoke, flames, or extinguishing agent will enter any compartment occupied by the crew or passengers. Third, each compartment must be equipped with a separate system of an approved type of smoke or fire detector, to give a warning at the pilot's station. And fourth, hand fire extinguishers must be readily available for use in all compartments of this category. Now Class C compartments. These are more automated. There's a separate smoke or fire detector system to give warning at the pilot or flight engineer station. There's an approved built-in fire extinguishing system, controlled from the pilot or flight engineer station — so the crew can discharge the agent remotely, without entering the compartment. There must be means provided to exclude hazardous quantities of smoke, flames, or other noxious gases from entering any compartment occupied by the crew or passengers. And finally, ventilation and draughts must be controlled within each compartment, so that the extinguishing agent used can control any fire likely to occur in the compartment. That last point is critical — if the airflow is uncontrolled, the extinguishing agent gets blown away and can't do its job. Then Class E compartments. These have a separate system of an approved type of smoke or fire detector. They must have means provided to shut off the ventilating air flow to or within the compartment, and the controls for such means must be accessible to the flight crew from within the cockpit. There must be means provided to exclude hazardous quantities of smoke, flames, or noxious gases from entering the cockpit. And finally, required crew emergency exits must be accessible under all cargo loading conditions. Let me pause and make sure you see the pattern here, because this is the heart of the lesson. Class B is the most manual — you physically go in with a hand extinguisher. Class C is the most automated — you have a built-in extinguishing system you control from the flight deck. Class E sits in between — you have detection, you can shut off ventilation from the cockpit, but you don't have a built-in extinguishing system; instead you rely on excluding the hazards from the cockpit and keeping your emergency exits accessible. One thing I want to stress, because it's easy to miss: every single class requires a separate smoke or fire detector system giving a warning at the pilot's station. That's the common thread. And note the word "separate" — each compartment gets its own independent detection system, not one shared across the aircraft. So to tie it together: when you're asked about compartment classification, you're really being asked about the level of fire protection and the crew's ability to respond.
