EET is Estimated Elapsed Time — the estimated time to fly from one point to another. ETA is Estimated Time of Arrival — the estimated time you'll reach your destination. GMT is Greenwich Mean Time — the time standard used in aviation. FL is Flight Level — a pressure altitude expressed in hundreds of feet, referenced to the standard pressure setting of 1013.25 hectopascals. FAT is Final Approach Track — the path you fly on the final approach segment.
Now the emergency and safety equipment. ELT is Emergency Location Transmitter — a device that transmits a distress signal to help locate a crashed aircraft. EPIRB is Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon — similar, but typically used for maritime or survival purposes. ED is Emergency Distance — the distance required to stop or abort in an emergency situation.
Let me move to the regulatory bodies and approvals. EASA is the European Aviation Safety Agency — the agency that regulates civil aviation safety in Europe. EC is the European Commission — the executive body of the European Union. ECAC is the European Civil Aviation Conference — an intergovernmental organization promoting cooperation in civil aviation across Europe. EU is the European Union. DG TREN is the Directorate-General for Transport and Energy — a department of the European Commission. FAA is the Federal Aviation Administration — the US aviation regulator. ICAO is the International Civil Aviation Organization — the UN specialized agency that sets global aviation standards.
Now the certification and approval terms. DOA is Design Organization Approval — approval granted to an organization that designs aircraft or components. DOE is Design Organization Exposition — the document that describes how that organization complies with the approval requirements. EPA is European Part Approval — approval for a part or appliance. ETSO is European Technical Standard Order — a standard for certain aviation articles. ETSOa is European Technical Standard Order authorization — the authorization to manufacture and sell articles to that standard. EPR is Environmental Protection Requirements — the standards for noise and emissions. ER is Essential Requirements — the fundamental safety requirements that must be met.
Let me cover the operational and licensing terms. FCL is Flight Crew Licensing — the regulations governing pilot licenses. FI is Flying Instructor — the person who teaches flying. FFS is Full Flight Simulator — the highest level of flight simulator, with full motion and visual systems. FTD is Flight Training Device — a lower-level training device without full motion. FTL is Flight Time Limitations — the rules limiting how many hours a crew can fly. GA is General Aviation — all civil aviation operations other than scheduled air services and cargo. GASIL is General Aviation Safety Information Leaflet — safety guidance published for GA pilots. GM is Guidance Material — explanatory material that supports regulations. H24 is Day and Night Operating Hours — continuous 24-hour operation. FAL is Facilitation of Air Transport — the simplification of border and customs procedures for air transport.
Two more terms. FLPFM is Foot Launched Powered Flying Machine — a powered aircraft that you launch by foot, like a powered paraglider. And ETOPS is Extended Twin Jet Operations — the rules that allow twin-engine aircraft to fly routes where an engine failure would put them more than a certain time from a suitable diversion airport.
One more thing — db is Decibel, the acoustic measurement unit, and E is Engine. And Ibn is Identification Beacon — a device that transmits a signal to identify the aircraft.
