Let's take them in order. First, the Air Traffic Services Reporting Office. This is a unit established for the purpose of receiving reports concerning air traffic services and flight plans submitted before departure. So think of it as the place where you hand in your flight plan and where you file reports about the air traffic services you've received. It's a specific, physical or administrative unit. Next, the Air Traffic Services Unit. This is a generic term, and it's important you understand it as an umbrella. It means variously an air traffic control unit, a flight information centre, or an air traffic services reporting office. So whenever you see "ATS unit" in the regulations, it's covering all three of those possibilities — control, information, and reporting. Then we have Air Transport Undertaking. This is an undertaking whose business includes the undertaking of flights for the purposes of public transport of passengers or cargo. So it's a commercial operation — a company whose business involves flying people or cargo for the public. The key phrase is "public transport" — that's what separates it from private or corporate flying. Now, the Airborne Collision Avoidance System, abbreviated ACAS. This is an aircraft system based on secondary surveillance radar transponder signals. Let me unpack that. Secondary surveillance radar, or SSR, is the system where the ground station interrogates the aircraft's transponder, and the transponder replies. ACAS works on those same transponder signals, but here's the crucial point — it operates independently of ground-based equipment. It's self-contained on the aircraft. Its job is to provide advice to the pilot on potential conflicting aircraft that are equipped with SSR transponders. So it's looking at the transponder replies of other aircraft around you and giving you guidance to avoid a collision. Next, the Airway. This is a control area or portion thereof established in the form of a corridor equipped with radio navigation aids. So an airway is essentially a defined corridor in the sky, and it's fitted with radio navigation aids so you can navigate along it precisely. It's a controlled route structure. Then the Alerting Service. This is a service provided to notify appropriate organizations regarding aircraft in need of search and rescue aid, and to assist such organizations as required. So if an aircraft is in distress or missing, the alerting service is what kicks in to inform the search and rescue organizations and then helps them once they're activated. Finally, the Alternate Aerodrome. This is an aerodrome to which an aircraft may proceed when it becomes either impossible or inadvisable to continue to, or to land at, the aerodrome of intended landing. And this definition branches into three specific types, and you need to know each one. The take-off alternate is an aerodrome at which an aircraft can land should this become necessary shortly after take-off, where it is not possible to use the aerodrome of departure. So if you lose an engine right after take-off and can't get back to where you started, that's your take-off alternate. The en route alternate is an aerodrome at which an aircraft would be able to land after experiencing an abnormal or emergency condition while en route. So you're mid-flight, something goes wrong, and you need somewhere to put down — that's your en route alternate. And the destination alternate is an aerodrome to which an aircraft may proceed should it become either impossible or inadvisable to land at the aerodrome of intended landing. So you've flown all the way to your destination, but you can't land there — weather, congestion, whatever — and you divert to the destination alternate. Notice the pattern across all three: they're all about having a plan B, but each one is tied to a specific phase of flight — take-off, en route, or arrival. That distinction is exactly what the examiners will test you on.
