Let’s start with the big idea: the meaning of what is said does not depend on language alone. It depends on the context — for both the person transmitting and the person receiving. If the context is different for each of them, the same message can have very different meanings. Take a simple phrase like ‘landing gear down’. In one context, it could be an executive order — a command to lower the undercarriage. In a different tone, it could be a question: ‘Is the undercarriage down?’ And in yet another tone, it could be a simple statement that the undercarriage is down at a stage when it should have been raised. Same words, completely different meanings, all because of context. Here’s another well-known example that shows how context totally changes meaning. Consider the sentence: “Woman without her man is useless.” Now add punctuation and a shift in context: “Woman: without her, man is useless.” Same string of words, but the meaning flips entirely. Now let’s move into the basic components of interpersonal communication. A scholar named Berlo — one of the foremost exponents of the science of communications — proposed six basic components that are widely accepted. I’ll walk you through each one. First is the source. All human communication has some source — some person or group of persons with a purpose, a reason for engaging in communication. The source has ideas, needs, intentions, information, and a purpose for communicating. But that alone isn’t enough. The purpose of the source has to be expressed in the form of a message. That brings us to the second component: the message. In human communication, a message is behaviour in physical form. It’s the translation of ideas, purposes, and intentions into a code — a systematic set of symbols. Third is the encoder. How do the source’s purposes get translated into a code or language? That requires the encoder. The encoder is responsible for taking the ideas of the source and putting them into a code. The most common encoders are: vocal mechanisms — that’s words, cries, musical notes; muscles of the hand — that gives us written words, pictures, diagrams; and other muscle systems of the body — gestures, facial expressions, posture. Fourth is the channel. I’ll expand on this later in the chapter, but briefly: a channel is a medium, a carrier of messages. Examples include speech, gestures, and writing. Now here’s a critical point: even though we have a source, a message, an encoder, and a channel, no communication has yet taken place. For communication to happen, we need someone else at the other end of the channel. When we talk, someone must listen. When we write, someone must be there to read. That brings us to the fifth component: the receiver. The person or persons at the other end of the channel are referred to as the receiver — or the target of communication. So to summarise the six components: source, message, encoder, channel, and receiver — and we’ll get to the sixth component later in the chapter. For now, the key takeaway is that communication is not just about words; it’s about context, encoding, and having someone at the other end to receive and decode the message.
