Just as the source—the person who wants to send a message—needs an encoder to translate their purpose into a message, the receiver needs a decoder to retranslate that message and put it into a form the receiver can actually use. Think of the decoder as the set of sensory skills belonging to the receiver. So if you're the pilot listening to a radio call, your ears and your brain's ability to interpret those sounds make up your decoder. Without a functioning decoder, the message never gets understood. Now, a quick note on the basic communication model. If you're ever asked for the four most basic components of communication, those are: source, message, channel, and receiver. That's the stripped-down core. Let's move to types of questions. Questions aren't just for asking for information—they can also be used as a tool to confirm information. And here's the key: questions can be moulded or loaded to anticipate an answer that is either desired or expected. For example, "do you find our newly redesigned seating comfortable?" That question invites an answer that pleases the questioner. On the other hand, "When you are smoking, do you always try and avoid causing discomfort to others?" That places the weight of social expectation on the responder. There are also ambiguous, imprecise, or complex questions—none of which belong in good crew communications. Fundamentally, there are three types of questions: leading, implicit, and explicit. Let's take them one at a time. First, leading questions. These are questions where the required answer is already built into the question. The words "isn't it" are often present. The classic example from student flying during "mutual" flying—that is, when a student is flying with an instructor—is: "That is Witney down there, isn't it?" The question already suggests the answer. This type of question normally indicates a loss of situational awareness. If you're asking a leading question like that, you're not genuinely seeking information; you're trying to confirm what you hope is true, which is a red flag. Second, implicit questions, also called open questions. These require either a single deduction or multiple deductions from the responder before they can answer. For example, a captain turns to their co-pilot and asks, "In view of the weather, what is the best course of action?" Before the co-pilot can answer, a number of factors must be considered. Among those factors might be: the type, position, and configuration of the aircraft; the type and proximity of the weather; the dangers that such weather might pose; the aircraft fuel state; the availability of ATC or airport facilities; and the qualifications of the aircrew, among others. The advantages of implicit or open questions are significant. First, a "second opinion" or group decision is brought into play, which probably improves the quality of the eventual conclusion. Second, normally more factors are investigated, thereby reducing the chances that important considerations are overlooked. So when you're flying as a crew, open questions encourage thorough analysis and shared decision-making. We'll cover explicit questions next, but for now, make sure you have the decoder concept clear, and understand the difference between a leading question—which often signals lost situational awareness—and an implicit open question, which invites a thoughtful, multi-factor response from your crewmate.
