Let me give you the lay of the land first, because this chapter is a roadmap of everything we're about to learn. The chapter opens with the fundamental split that governs all of this: the difference between systems used for non-pressurized flight and systems used for pressurized flight. That's the core contrast you need to hold onto. Non-pressurized means the cabin is at the same pressure as the outside air — we're not sealing it up. Pressurized means we are deliberately building up pressure inside the cabin to keep everyone comfortable at high altitude. From there, the chapter walks through the machinery that makes pressurization work. It starts with Engine Bleed Air Systems — that's the source of our air. We have Ram Air Valves, which bring in outside air when we need it, and a Mass Flow Controller, which regulates how much air is actually flowing into the cabin. Temperature Control is exactly what it sounds like — the system that keeps the cabin at the temperature the crew selects. Finally, we look at how the air gets to the people. That's Air Distribution — the ducting and vents. Within that, we have Gasper Air, which is the individual air nozzles you see above each passenger seat, and Trim Air, which is warm air mixed in to fine-tune the temperature in different zones. And we finish with Recirculation Fans, which pull cabin air back through filters and mix it with fresh bleed air to save energy. So that's the whole arc of the chapter: source the air, cool it, condition it, control it, and distribute it. We're going to work through each of these in detail. Let's start at the very beginning with that distinction between non-pressurized and pressurized flight, because everything else builds on it.
