The section on Map Reading itself teaches you how to systematically interpret the map in flight. This includes Visual Checkpoints — these are prominent, easily identifiable features on the ground that you can use to confirm your position. Selecting Visual Checkpoints is the skill of choosing features that are unambiguous and visible from your altitude, such as a distinct bend in a river, a major road junction, a lake with a unique shape, or a large town.
The chapter then lists Some Typical Visual Checkpoints on page 225, giving you examples of what works well. On page 226, it warns about Some Visual Navigation Hazards — things that can confuse you, like similar-looking towns, roads that disappear into forests, or features that look different from different angles.
