Welcome to Chapter 22, Area Climatology. This is where we take all the general principles of meteorology you've learned and apply them to specific regions of the world that you will fly through. As a professional pilot, you need to know what weather to expect in different areas during different seasons, not just in theory, but for actual flight planning and decision-making. Let me start with the chapter's scope. This chapter covers several major geographical regions. We begin with Northwest Africa, then move to the North Atlantic Region, followed by Continental Northwest Europe, then the Mediterranean Sea and Adjacent Lands, and finally a region I'll describe as Arabia, the Gulf Area, Arabian Sea and Borders Enclosed within 15°N-35°N And 35°E-75°E. That last one is a very specific box of latitude and longitude covering the Arabian Peninsula and surrounding waters. For each of these regions, the chapter is structured to give you a consistent set of information. First, we look at Geographical Considerations — the physical layout of the land and sea that drives the local climate. Then, we break it down by season: Winter and Summer. Under each season, we examine the Pressure Systems that dominate, the Weather and Surface Winds you can expect, and the Upper Winds at altitude. So, for our first region, Northwest Africa, we will start with the Geographical Considerations, then move into the Pressure Systems, then the Weather and Surface Winds, and finally the Upper Winds. For the North Atlantic Region, we will look at the Geographical Area, then Winter weather, then Summer weather.
