
Welcome to Chapter 3 of your Human Performance and Limitations syllabus. This chapter is called Oxygen and Respiration, and it is one of the most critical topics for you as a professional pilot. Let me walk you through what we are about to cover.
We start with Oxygen Intake — how the body actually gets oxygen from the air into the bloodstream. Then we move into the Composition of the Standard Atmosphere, where we look at what the air is made of, including humidity, and the fundamental Gas Laws and Partial Pressure. Partial pressure is the key concept that explains why we need supplemental oxygen at altitude.
From there, we have a Thresholds of Oxygen Requirements Summary — a clear set of altitudes and the oxygen rules that apply at each level. Then we dive into the different types of hypoxia, beginning with Hypoxic Hypoxia, which is the most relevant type for aviation. I will teach you its symptoms and then the Stages/Zones of Hypoxia — the progressive levels of oxygen deprivation.
We then cover the Factors Determining the Severity of and the Susceptibility to Hypoxic Hypoxia — things like altitude, rate of ascent, physical activity, and individual differences. Next is Anaemic Hypoxia, which is a different type caused by a reduced ability of the blood to carry oxygen.
Two very practical concepts come next: Time of Useful Consciousness (TUC) and Effective Performance Time (EPT). TUC is how long you have from the onset of hypoxia until you lose the ability to take corrective action. EPT is a slightly different measure. I will give you the Times of Useful Consciousness at Various Altitudes — numbers you need to know.
Then we cover Hyperventilation — breathing too fast or too deep, which can mimic hypoxia symptoms. I will teach you the Symptoms of Hyperventilation and then a critical decision-making tool: Hypoxia or Hyperventilation? — how to tell them apart in the cockpit.
We move into Cabin Pressurization — how the aircraft maintains a safe cabin altitude. Then Cabin Decompression — what happens when that system fails, including rapid and explosive decompression. That leads to Decompression Sickness (DCS), also known as the bends, and we cover DCS in Flight and Treatment — what to do if it occurs.
