
This is the index of the book, so I want to walk you through what it tells us about the structure of the course, and I'll flag the key terms you'll be meeting as we go.
First, you'll see the fuel types. AVTUR is listed at page 367 — that's the standard aviation turbine fuel, the kerosene-based jet fuel you'll deal with most. Right next to it is JET B, also called AVTAG, which stands for Aviation Turbine Gasoline — that's the wider-cut, more volatile fuel used in colder climates. Then there's Jet Fuel Additives at page 368, which covers the chemicals added to those fuels.
Now, the Jet Pipe is at page 279 — that's the exhaust duct that carries the hot gas away from the turbine and accelerates it to produce thrust. And you'll see Kinetic Energy at pages 5 and 9, and Momentum Law at page 5 — those are the physics foundations for how thrust is actually generated.
Moving into the engine systems: Liquid and Air-cooled Systems at page 58, and Liquid Cooling at pages 27 and 58 — that's the cooling side. Then Lubricant at page 43, Lubrication System at page 43, and Lubrication Monitoring Instruments at page 47 — that's the oil system that keeps the engine bearings alive. Low Viscosity at page 48 refers to how thin the oil is.
On the ignition side, you have Magnetos at page 67, Magneto Checks at page 68, and the Magneto rpm Drop Check at page 69 — that's the magneto drop test you do before flight. And Low Tension Booster Coil at page 69 is part of the starting ignition system.
For the fuel and induction system: Manifold Absolute Pressure, abbreviated MAP, at page 137, Manifold Pressure at pages 20 and 137, and the Manifold Pressure Gauge at page 20 — that gauge tells you the pressure in the intake manifold, which is your power indication on a piston engine. Mixture Control at page 108 is how you lean or enrich the fuel-air mixture. MOGAS at page 77 is motor gasoline — the automotive fuel that some engines are certified to run on.
Now the performance and thrust side: Mechanical Efficiency at page 22, Mass at page 9, and Moment at page 9 — that's the turning effect of a force. Momentum Thrust at page 310 is the thrust produced by the change in momentum of the air through the engine. And you'll see Low Bypass Ratio Engine at page 209, and Low Ratio Bypass Engine Exhaust System at page 282 — that's the exhaust system for a low-bypass turbofan.
Finally, on the fuel system side: Low Pressure Pump, abbreviated LP pump, at page 375 — that's the first-stage pump that feeds fuel from the tank to the high-pressure pump. And Low Pressure Boiling at page 78 — that's when fuel boils at low pressure, which is a vapour-lock risk at altitude.
So this index is your map. The key takeaway is that the course is built around the fuel types, the jet pipe and thrust physics, the lubrication and cooling systems, the ignition and magneto checks, the manifold pressure and mixture controls, and the fuel pumps and bypass-ratio exhaust systems.
