Let's begin with the chapter outline. The introduction kicks things off on page 53, and then we move straight into Aerodrome Operating Minima: Operator’s Responsibility. That means the operator — the airline or company — has the duty to establish the minimum weather conditions under which they will allow an approach or take-off at a given aerodrome. It's not left to the pilot alone; the operator sets the baseline.
Next we have Classification of Aeroplanes. Aircraft are grouped into categories based on their approach speed — that classification determines which minima apply to them. Then we get into Low Visibility Operations - General Operating Rules. These are the overarching rules that govern any operation when visibility is reduced, whether for take-off, approach, or landing.
Then comes Terminology — a section that defines all the key terms you'll need. After that, Take-off Minima — the minimum weather conditions required to legally begin a take-off. That's followed by Visual Reference, which explains what visual cues you must have in sight to continue an approach or landing.
Then we have Required RVR/Visibility. RVR stands for Runway Visual Range — it's a more precise measurement of visibility along the runway, reported in metres. This section tells you what RVR values are needed for different phases of flight.
There's a subsection called Figure 5.2 Exceptions on page 59, which covers special cases where the standard minima don't apply. Then we move into Low Visibility Ops - Aerodrome Considerations — what the aerodrome itself must have in terms of lighting, markings, and procedures to support low visibility operations. That's followed by Low Visibility Ops - Training and Qualifications — what training the flight crew must have completed.
Then Low Visibility Ops - Operating Procedures — the specific procedures to follow during these operations. And Low Visibility Ops - Minimum Equipment — the aircraft equipment that must be serviceable.
Next we have System Minima — the minimum weather conditions tied to the performance of the aircraft's systems. Then Non-precision Approach — an approach that uses lateral guidance but not vertical guidance, like a VOR or NDB approach. For that, we have Minimum Descent Height, or MDH — the lowest altitude you may descend to without having the required visual reference.
Then Visual Reference again, and Required RVR for non-precision approaches.
After that, we break into precision approaches, which are ILS-based. First, Precision Approach - Category I Operations — that's a standard ILS approach with a decision height of 200 feet and an RVR of 550 metres or more. Then Category II Operations — lower minima, with a decision height below 200 feet but not less than 100 feet, and lower RVR. Then Category III Operations — the lowest of all, with very low or even zero decision height and very low RVR.
There's a subsection on No Decision Height Operations — that's Category IIIc, where you have no decision height at all; you land purely on the autopilot and guidance systems. Then Visual Reference for Category III, and Category III RVR Requirements — the specific RVR values needed for each sub-category.
Then we have Circling — an approach where you align with a runway other than the one you originally approached, using visual manoeuvring. Visual Approach — an approach conducted under visual flight rules, where you navigate by visual reference to the ground. VFR Operating Minima — the minimum weather conditions for flight under Visual Flight Rules. And finally Special VFR — a clearance to operate in controlled airspace in weather below standard VFR minima, but still with some visual reference.
