Additionally, the operator provides operations staff and flight crew with an aircraft operating manual for each aircraft type they operate. This manual contains the normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures relating to the operation of that aircraft. It also includes details of the aircraft systems and the checklists to be used. So everything from how you start the engines normally, to how you handle a failure, to the step-by-step checklist flows—it's all in that manual.
Now, moving to the basic requirements. An aeroplane has to be equipped with instruments that allow the flight crew to do three things: control the flight path of the aeroplane, carry out any required procedural manoeuvres, and comply with the operating limitations of the aeroplane in the expected operating conditions. So the instruments aren't just for show—they must give you the information you need to fly the plane safely within its limits, in the weather and environment you expect to encounter.
Other equipment carried in the aeroplane is required for either safety, navigation, or regulatory reasons. That covers everything from life rafts to navigation charts to the specific items mandated by the aviation authority.
Let's talk about internal doors and curtains. The requirements for the security of the flight deck have already been discussed in earlier parts of the book, but EU-OPS—the European operational rules—has additional requirements here. For all aeroplanes with more than 19 passenger seats, you are required to have a lockable door between the passenger compartment and the flight deck. That door must have a notice on it stating that entry is only permitted to crew members. So it's not just a door; it's a secured barrier with a clear legal notice.
Where a compartment not usually occupied by passengers has an emergency exit, the door leading from the passenger compartment to that area also has specific requirements—the excerpt cuts off there, but the principle is that any path to an emergency exit must be properly controlled and marked.
