Let's start with the radar terms, since they cluster together. Primary Radar — that's the basic radar that detects a target by the reflection of its own transmitted pulse. It's listed at pages 183, 188, and 211. Secondary Radar isn't in this list, but you'll see PAR — Precision Approach Radar — at pages 184, 190, and 199. That's a ground-based radar that gives you very precise azimuth and elevation guidance during an approach, and it's a primary radar type. PPI is the Plan Position Indicator — that's the display on a radar screen, the circular sweep showing targets around the station. PRF is Pulse Repetition Frequency — how many pulses the radar transmits per second, listed at 185, 200, and 248. And pps is pulses per second — the unit for PRF, at 185 and 309. Now the antenna terms. Parabolic Dish at page 60, and Parabolic Reflector at 192 — that's the curved dish that focuses the radar beam. Parabolic at 211 refers to the same shape. Pencil-shaped Beam at 211 — that's the narrow, focused beam you get from a parabolic reflector. Phased Array at 61 — that's an antenna with multiple elements that steer the beam electronically. Parasitic Elements at 58 — those are the unpowered elements on a Yagi antenna that shape the radiation. Polar Diagrams at 57 and 86 — those are the plots showing how an antenna radiates in different directions. Now the propagation and signal terms. Period at page 5 — that's the time for one complete cycle of a wave. Polarization at 4 — the orientation of the electric field of the wave. Propagation at 19 — how the wave travels. Propagation Paths at 21 — the different routes the signal can take. Propagation Error at 117 — errors caused by the path the signal travels. Power at 20 — signal strength. Phase Comparison at 9 and 112 — comparing the phase of two signals to determine position. Phase Difference at 112 — the difference in phase between two signals. Phase Modulation at 43 and 47 — varying the phase of a carrier to carry information. Now the navigation systems. P-RNAV at 261 — that's Precision Area Navigation, the RNAV standard for terminal operations. PLAN at 286 and Plan Mode at 289 — that's the flight management system display showing your planned route. POS INIT at 272 — that's the Position Initialization page on the FMS, where you enter your starting position. Position Reference System at 306 — the system that provides position data. Position Dilution of Precision — PDOP — at 318 — that's the GPS accuracy factor based on satellite geometry. P Codes at 309 — the precise GPS codes. PRN at 308 — Pseudo-Random Noise, the code that identifies each GPS satellite. And the approach aids. PAPIs at 155 — Precision Approach Path Indicators — the lights that show you if you're on the glide path. Precipitation Static at 98 — static noise caused by rain or snow hitting the aircraft. Practical Range at 187 — the usable range of a radar. That's the P section of the index. It's a lot of terms, but they're all connected — radar, antennas, propagation, and navigation systems.
