Crew Resource Management and CRM, both on pages 138 and 237 — this is the entire system of using all available resources — people, equipment, information — to achieve safe and efficient flight. CRM is the acronym, and it's a core part of modern aviation. Culture, pages 258 and 261 — this refers to organisational or national culture and how it affects safety, communication, and decision-making in the cockpit. Cyanosis, page 44 — this is a bluish discolouration of the skin and mucous membranes, especially around the lips and fingernails. It's a visible sign of hypoxia — when your blood isn't carrying enough oxygen. Now moving into D. Dark Adaptation, page 78 — this is the process by which your eyes adjust to low light levels. It takes about 30 minutes to fully adapt, and it's easily ruined by exposure to bright light. Critical for night flying. Data-driven Processing, page 148 — this is a type of information processing where you rely on the actual data coming in from your senses or instruments, rather than on expectations or mental models. It's bottom-up processing. DCS on page 49 — that stands for Decompression Sickness. It's the condition caused by nitrogen bubbles forming in the blood and tissues when you ascend too quickly after being at pressure, like after a dive. Also known as 'the bends'. Decibels, page 62 — the unit for measuring sound intensity. In aviation, we care about noise exposure and hearing protection. Decoder, page 255 — this is part of a communication model. The decoder is the person who receives and interprets a message. In crew communication, the decoder's job is to understand the message accurately. Decompression Sickness is listed again on page 49 — same as DCS, just the full name. Departure from the Rules, page 170 — this refers to situations where a pilot knowingly or unknowingly deviates from standard operating procedures or regulations. It's a human factors concept. Design Eye Position, page 274 — this is the specific position where a pilot's eyes should be to see the instruments and outside world correctly, as designed by the aircraft manufacturer. It's important for proper scan and visibility. Deterioration Effect, page 302 — this is the decline in performance over time, often due to fatigue, boredom, or lack of practice. Diabetes, page 109 — a medical condition affecting blood sugar regulation. It's relevant to medical certification and fitness to fly. Diaphragm, page 37 — the main muscle of breathing. It's a dome-shaped sheet of muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. When it contracts, you inhale. Diarrhoea Controllers, page 113 — these are medications used to stop diarrhoea. They're relevant because they can have side effects that affect flying, like drowsiness or blurred vision. Diastolic Pressure, page 26 — this is the lower number in a blood pressure reading. It's the pressure in your arteries when the heart is resting between beats. Diffusion, page 21 — this is the passive movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. In the lungs, oxygen diffuses from the air into the blood, and carbon dioxide diffuses out. Digital Display, page 276 — a type of instrument display that shows information in numerical or digital form, as opposed to an analogue dial. Dimensions of Personality, page 229 — this refers to models that describe personality traits, like the 'Big Five' or Eysenck's dimensions. They help us understand how personality affects behaviour in the cockpit. Diving, page 50 — this relates to the physiological effects of scuba diving before flying, particularly the risk of decompression sickness. Finally, DODAR — this is a decision-making model used in aviation. It stands for Detect, Observe, Decide, Act, Review. It's a structured way to handle problems or emergencies.
