Look at the structure — Page 565, Lesson 758

This is the index of the Air Law manual — the table of contents that maps out the entire syllabus. I want to walk you through what this tells us, because it's your roadmap for the whole course. Look at the structure. The first block lists Annexes 8 through 18, all pointing to page 31. These are the ICAO Annexes — the international standards and recommended practices that govern civil aviation. Annex 8 covers airworthiness of aircraft, Annex 9 is facilitation, Annex 10 is aeronautical telecommunications, Annex 11 is air traffic services, Annex 12 is search and rescue, Annex 13 is aircraft accident investigation, Annex 14 is aerodromes, Annex 15 is aeronautical information services, Annex 16 is environmental protection, Annex 17 is security, and Annex 18 is the safe transport of dangerous goods. All of them are introduced together on page 31 because that's where the ICAO framework is laid out. Now scan down the alphabetical entries. You'll see "Applicable law" at page 24 — that's the legal foundation. "Approach Control Service" at 273, "Approach Lighting Systems" at 420, "Apron" at 370, "Apron Management Service" at 445, "Apron Safety Lines" at 399. Notice the pattern — these are all distinct operational concepts, each with its own page reference. Then you have the acronyms. "ACC" stands for Area Control Centre, page 257. "ARP" at 374 — that's the Aerodrome Reference Point. "ASDA" at 375 — Accelerate-Stop Distance Available. "ASHTAM" at 358 — that's the notice to airmen about volcanic ash or other hazards. "ATCU" at 260 — Air Traffic Control Unit. "ATIS" at 278 — Automatic Terminal Information Service. "ATPL(A)" at 78 — Airline Transport Pilot Licence, Aeroplane. Now here's the key thing I want you to notice. The index is organized alphabetically, but the page numbers tell you the logical order of study. "Authority of the Commander" at page 34 comes early — that's fundamental. "ATC Clearance" at 108 and "ATC Clearances" at 274 — note the singular and plural are listed separately, because they're treated in different contexts. "Automatic Dependent Surveillance" at 280 — that's ADS, the surveillance system where the aircraft automatically transmits its position. And look at the last entries: "Barrettes" at 420 — those are the bars in approach lighting systems. "Base Checks" at 82 — those are the flight checks you do in the aircraft. "Base Turn" at 183 — that's the turn from the outbound leg to the final approach. "Basic Instrument Flight Trainer" at 72 — that's the flight simulator device. So this index is telling you the full scope: from the ICAO Annexes that set international standards, through the legal framework, to the operational procedures, the licensing requirements, the aerodrome design, and the surveillance systems. Every one of these terms will become part of your professional vocabulary.
