
This is the index of the book — the alphabetical listing of every topic and where it lives in the text. So what I want you to take from this is not the content of any one subject, but the map of the whole syllabus. Let me walk you through the entries that matter, because each one is a technical term you'll be expected to know cold.
Start with the Flight Director family. We have the Flight Director System (FDS) at page 337, the Flight Director Computer (FDC) at 341, and the Flight Director Modes at 342. Then the Flight Director Take-off Mode at 343, Flight Director Approaches (FDA) at 345, FD Manoeuvre Protection at 346, and Flight Director Gain Scheduling at 347. So the Flight Director is a whole subsystem — the computer, the modes it can run, the take-off mode, the approach mode, and the protection and gain scheduling that shape its behaviour.
Then the Flight Management family. We have Flight Management at 271, the Flight Management System (FMS) at 311 and 375, the Flight Management Computer (FMC) at 293 and 367, and the Flight Management and Guidance System (FMGS) at 375. Note the distinction — the FMS is the overall system, the FMC is the computer at its heart, and the FMGS is the combined management-and-guidance package. There's also the FMS-CDU at 273 — that's the Control Display Unit, the pilot's interface with the FMS.
Now the recording and warning side. FDR is the Flight Data Recorder at 497, and the Flight Data Interface Unit at 499 — that's the unit that feeds data into the recorder. Then Flight Warning System at 433 and 435, and Flight Envelope Protection at 415 — the system that stops you exceeding the aircraft's structural and aerodynamic limits.
The gyro and sensing entries: Fibre Optic Gyros at 145 — that's a gyro that uses light in optical fibre to sense rotation. Field Strength at 111, and Ferrous at 108 — ferrous means containing iron, which matters for magnetic sensing. Then the Flux Detector at 211, the Flux Valve at 211 and 214, and the Flux Valve Leg at 215 — these are the sensing elements in a remote-indicating compass system.
A few operational entries: Flexible Take-off at 397 — that's a reduced-thrust take-off technique. Flight in Rough Air at 16, and Feet at 2 — that's the unit of altitude. FMCW at 263 — that's Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave, a radar technique. FMC Speed Mode at 395 — the speed control mode run by the Flight Management Computer. And First Stage of Integration at 238 — that's a step in the inertial navigation system's alignment or computation process.
So this index page is your syllabus map. Every one of these entries is a topic you'll meet in full later.
