So what I want to walk you through is how to read this index, because it's a map of the entire syllabus, and it tells you exactly where every concept lives in the book. Let me show you how it works. Each entry has the full name of the topic, and then a page number. For example, "Flight Data Recorder" is on page 497. The abbreviation "FDR" is also listed separately, pointing to the same page 497. So if you're looking for the recorder, you can find it under either the full name or the acronym. Now, notice how the index groups related items. "Flight Director" appears many times, each with its own page: "Flight Director Approaches (FDA)" on page 345, "Flight Director Computer (FDC)" on page 341, "Flight Director Display" on page 179, "Flight Director Gain Scheduling" on page 347, "Flight Director Modes" on page 342, "Flight Director System (FDS)" on page 337, and "Flight Director Take-off Mode" on page 343. So the index breaks a big system into its components, and each component has its own page reference. Similarly, "Flight Management" on page 271, "Flight Management and Guidance System (FMGS)" on page 375, "Flight Management Computer (FMC)" on pages 293 and 367, and "Flight Management System (FMS)" on pages 311, 375, and 367. Notice that some entries have multiple page numbers — that means the topic appears in several places, and you'd want to check each one.
