This is the index of the General Navigation manual — the table of contents for the whole book. I want to walk you through what this tells you about the structure of your course, because knowing where things live in this book is part of learning to navigate. Look at the range of topics. We start with the Earth itself — Degree, Difference in Longitude, Conversion of Latitude and Longitude, Distance on the Earth. That's the foundation: you must understand the shape of the planet and how we measure position on it before anything else makes sense. Then we move into the practical flying mathematics — Distance, Speed and Time, and the errors that affect your instruments. Density Error and Correction of Compressibility Error are about your airspeed and altimetry systems. These are the things that make your readings wrong if you don't correct for them. Notice the navigation-specific terms scattered through here. Departure, Convergency, Conversion Angle, Closing Angle — these are the geometry of great circles and rhumb lines, the heart of how a route actually works over the curved Earth. Co-latitude and Concentric Circles belong to the same family — they're tools for solving spherical triangles. Then we get into projections — Cylindrical Projections, Conical Projections, Conformality. That's map-making: how we flatten the curved Earth onto a chart, and what distortions come with each method. Contours are about terrain representation on those charts. Time is in here too — Co-ordinated Universal Time, which we call UTC, and Declination, which is the Sun's position relative to the equator. Civil Twilight and the Civil Twilight Tables from the Air Almanac — that's when you can legally fly without navigation lights, and how you look it up. And we have the compass work — Deviation, Compass Swing, Correction of Coefficients, Double Track Angle Error. That's the magnetic compass and how we calibrate it. Distance Measuring Equipment, DME, is the radio navigation aid. Datum is the reference model of the Earth's shape. So this index is your map of the course. Each of these entries is a skill you'll need. When we get to the actual chapters, I'll teach you each one properly — the definitions, the formulas, the limits, the failure conditions. For now, just understand the landscape: the Earth, the charts, the instruments, the time, and the navigation aids. That's the whole of General Navigation in one page.
