This is the index of the book — the table of contents. I want to walk you through what this tells us about the structure of the Instrumentation volume, because knowing where things live is part of learning the syllabus.
Look at the entries here. We have "Attitude Director Indicator (ADI)" at page 281 — that's the primary flight instrument that combines attitude and flight director commands. "Attitude Reference" at 366, "Attitude Sensor" at 354 — these are the building blocks of the attitude and heading reference systems.
Then we move into the autopilot world. "Automatic Flight Control System" at page 97 — that's the foundation chapter. "Autopilot Flight Director System (AFDS)" at 368 — that's the integrated system that couples the autopilot to the flight director. "Autoland System" at 379, "Autoland" at 365 — the automatic landing capability. "A Three Axis System" at 356 and "A Two Axis System" at 356 — these describe how many control axes the autopilot commands: pitch and roll for two-axis, adding yaw for three-axis.
Notice the autothrottle entries: "Autothrottle System" at the end, "A/T Engagement" at 393, "A/T Disengagement" at 393, "A/T - PMC Operation" at 393, "Autothrottle Disengage Light" at 396, "Autothrottle Disengage Switches" at 395. PMC is the Performance Management Computer — it's what computes the thrust settings the autothrottle flies to.
We also have "Automatic Trim (Auto-trim)" at 361 — that's the system that moves the stabilizer to keep the aircraft in trim as the autopilot flies. "Automatic Synchronization" at 360 — that's when the two autopilot channels align their commands. "Autopilot Interlocks" at 359 — the safety logic that prevents invalid engagements. "Autopilot Disengage Warnings" at 374 — the alerts when the autopilot drops out. "Autopilot Gain Adaption" at 417 — how the autopilot adjusts its control gains with airspeed and altitude.
Then there's the communications and data link side: "ATC" at 317 — Air Traffic Control. "ATM Data Link Messages" at 320 — Air Traffic Management messages sent digitally. "ATN" at 328 — the Aeronautical Telecommunication Network. "ATSU" at 319 — Air Traffic Services Unit. "Attention Getters" at 319 — the visual and aural alerts that draw the crew's attention to a new message.
And at the top we have "At about 1 foot GA" at 382 and "At about 5 feet GA" at 382 — GA is Ground Acceleration, and these are the radio altimeter callouts during the flare and landing sequence.
So this index is your map. When we get to the autopilot chapter, you'll see how the AFDS, the autothrottle, the trim system, and the interlocks all work together as one integrated flight control system. That's the big picture this table of contents is laying out for you.
