
This is the index of the book — the alphabetical listing of topics and the page numbers where they appear. I want to walk you through what this tells you, because learning to read an index is part of learning how to use your reference material.
Look at the entries here. You have LAND 3, which is an autoland capability — that's the automatic landing system that can bring the aircraft down in zero visibility, and it's referenced at page 380. Then Landing Flare Retard Mode at page 395 — that's the mode that reduces the rate of descent just before touchdown, the flare.
Now the gyro entries. Laser Gyros at pages 253 and 254 — that's the ring laser gyro, the modern replacement for the spinning-mass gyro. Laser Lock at page 257 — that's when the laser gyro locks onto a frequency, a phenomenon called lock-in. Lasing at page 255 — that's the actual process of the laser emitting light.
Navigation entries. Lateral Navigation (L NAV) at page 369 — that's the autopilot mode that steers the aircraft along a lateral path. LNAV at pages 271 and 275 — same thing, the abbreviation. LOC/VOR (LNAV) at page 345 — that's the localizer and VOR navigation combined.
The autopilot modes. Leaving A/P GA mode at page 384 — that's when the autopilot leaves go-around mode. Level Change Mode (LVL CHG) at page 371 — that's the autopilot mode that climbs or descends at a selected rate. Localizer and Glide Slope Armed at page 381 — that's when the approach modes are armed, ready to capture. Localizer Capture at page 381 — that's when the localizer beam is actually captured.
The displays. LCD at pages 281 and 282 — that's Liquid Crystal Display. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) at page 281 — the full name. LED Display at page 242 and LED displays at page 241 — that's Light Emitting Diode displays.
The gyro corrections. Latitude Nut Correction at page 161 — that's the correction for the gyro's apparent drift due to Earth's rotation at a given latitude. Latitude Rider Nut at page 161 — that's the mechanical device that applies that correction. Levelling / Mercury Switches at page 172 — that's the mercury switch leveling mechanism for gyros. Levelling Switch at page 220 — that's the switch that levels the gyro.
The flight envelope. Limiting Mach Number at page 85 — that's the maximum Mach number the aircraft can fly. Limiting Speeds at page 44 — the maximum and minimum speeds. Local Speed of Sound (LSS) at page 83 — that's the speed of sound at the local conditions.
The performance. Load Factor at pages 129 and 416 — that's the ratio of lift to weight, the g-loading. Linear Acceleration at page 124 — that's acceleration in a straight line. Liquid Swirl at page 130 — that's a fuel flow measurement technique. Lively at page 129 — that's a term describing a responsive control feel.
The rest. Latitude at page 2 — that's the angular distance north or south of the equator. Litres at page 2 — that's the volume unit for fuel. Level A, Level B, Level C at page 433 — those are autoland certification levels, the categories of automatic landing capability.
