Now, some entries have page ranges. "Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)" is at page 281, and you'll also see "LCD" listed separately at pages 281 and 282 — that's the same display technology, just indexed under both the full name and the abbreviation. "LED Display" is at page 242, and "LED displays" at page 241 — again, the same light-emitting diode displays, indexed under slightly different names.
You'll notice the index uses abbreviations too. "LNAV" is listed at pages 271 and 275, and the full term "Lateral Navigation (L NAV)" is at page 369. So if you're looking for lateral navigation, you can find it under either the abbreviation or the full name. Similarly, "LOC/VOR (LNAV)" is at page 345 — that's the localizer and VOR navigation mode combined.
Now, some entries are very specific to autopilot modes. "Landing Flare Retard Mode" is at page 395 — that's the mode that reduces engine thrust during the landing flare. "Leaving A/P GA mode" is at page 384 — that's the go-around mode on the autopilot. "Level Change Mode (LVL CHG)" is at page 371 — that's the autopilot mode that changes altitude at a selected rate. "Localizer and Glide Slope Armed" is at page 381, and "Localizer Capture" is also at page 381 — those are the two stages of an ILS approach on the autopilot.
There are also entries for specific instruments and corrections. "Latitude Nut Correction" is at page 161, and "Latitude Rider Nut" is also at page 161 — those are parts of the directional gyro that correct for apparent drift due to Earth's rotation. "Levelling / Mercury Switches" is at page 172, and "Levelling Switch" is at page 220 — those are the switches that sense the vertical attitude of the aircraft.
You'll also see entries for performance and flight dynamics. "Limiting Mach Number" is at page 85, "Limiting Speeds" is at page 44, "Local Speed of Sound (LSS)" is at page 83 — that's the speed of sound at the local conditions. "Linear Acceleration" is at page 124, "Load Factor" is at page 416, and "Liquid Swirl" is at page 130 — that's a phenomenon in certain instruments. "Lively" is at page 129 — that's a term describing how an instrument responds.
And there are units and basic quantities. "Latitude" is at page 2, "Litres" is at page 2 — those are fundamental units and coordinates.
So the way you use this index is: you look up a topic alphabetically, find the page number, and go straight there. It's your quick-reference tool during revision. When you're studying a chapter, you can use the index to cross-reference related topics across the book.
Now, there's one thing I want to point out. The index entries are grouped by the first letter — here we're in the "L" section. So everything from "LAND 3" at page 380 through "LOC/VOR (LNAV)" at page 345 is alphabetically under "L". That's how the whole index is organized.
