This is the index of the book — the alphabetical listing of every topic covered in the instrumentation syllabus, with the page numbers where each is discussed. So what I want to walk you through is how to read this index, because it's actually a map of the whole course. Let me show you the structure. You'll see entries like "Cone of Confusion" at page 369, "Configuration Module" at page 97, "Configuration Warning" at page 446. Each of these is a technical term, and the number tells you where in the book that topic is explained. So if you're studying a particular system, you can look it up here and jump straight to the right page. Notice how some entries appear multiple times. Take "Control and Display Unit" — you'll see it listed at pages 40 and 276, and then again as "Control and Display Unit (CDU)" at page 271, and as "control/display unit (CDU)" in lowercase at page 240. That's the same component — the CDU — appearing in different contexts throughout the book. The index is telling you that this unit is discussed in several places, each time from a different angle. The CDU is the pilot's interface with the flight management computer — the screen and keypad you use to enter route data — and it comes up in multiple chapters because it's central to so many systems. You'll also notice the index uses abbreviations. "CPA" at page 483, "CPDLC" at pages 325, 326, 327, "CPU" at page 308, "CRT" at pages 281 and 282, "CVR" at page 505. These are all acronyms you'll need to know cold. CPDLC is Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications — that's the system for sending text messages between air traffic control and the cockpit instead of voice. CPU is the Central Processing Unit — the computer's brain. CRT is Cathode Ray Tube — the older type of display screen. CVR is Cockpit Voice Recorder. Each of these gets its full explanation on the page listed. Now, some entries have a little extra detail in parentheses. Look at "Course Deviation Indicator (CDI Bar)" at page 340 — that tells you the full name and the common abbreviation. "Course Selection (Localizer)" at page 291 — that's a specific function within the instrument landing system. "Cruise Lateral Navigation (LNAV)" at page 275 — that's the autopilot's lateral guidance during cruise. The parentheses are giving you the precise context for that particular discussion. You'll also see some entries that look like they're repeated or slightly different. "Current Heading" at page 291 and "Current Track" at page 291 — those are two different values, heading versus track, and they're discussed on the same page because they're closely related. Heading is where the nose is pointing; track is where the aircraft is actually going over the ground. The index lists them separately because they're distinct concepts, even though they appear together. And you'll see things like "Data Base" at page 272, "Data Communications Display Unit" at page 318, "Data Digital Buses" at page 17, "Data Link" at page 318, "Data Management Unit" at page 499. These are all different data-related systems, and the index is showing you they're separate topics with separate page references. So the way to use this index is as a lookup tool. When you're revising, you can check whether you know what each of these terms means. If you see "Cross Track Error" at page 243 and you're not sure what it is, that's your cue to go read that page. The index is essentially a checklist of every concept you're expected to master in this syllabus. That's the whole function of this page — it's the gateway to the content. The real learning happens on the pages it points to, but this tells you what's there and where to find it.
