
This is the index of the book — the alphabetical list of topics and the page numbers where they appear. I want to walk you through what this tells you, because learning to read an index is part of learning to use your training material professionally.
Look at the entries we have here. We're in the "S" section. You see Roll Error at page 175, Roll-out at 383, ROM at 309, Rotor at 137, Rotor Bearing Friction at 142, Rotor RPM at 140, RTE at pages 273 and 274, RTE DATA at 286, Runway Alignment at 383, Runway Awareness and Advisory System at 471, and Runway Visual Range (RVR) at 386.
Then we move into the S entries. Safety Criticality at 310. SAGNAC at 255, and the SAGNAC effect at 256 — note that's the same word, but one is the device or concept, the other is the physical effect it exploits. SAT at pages 30 and 97 — that's Static Air Temperature. SATCOM at 317, and its full name Satellite Communication at the same page 317. Schuler Oscillation at 238, Schuler Period at 237, Schuler Tuning at 257 — three related terms, three different pages. Scripting Language at 310. Secondary Precession at 185, Secondary Torque at 185 — same page, they're linked. Secondary Winding at 217. Second Integrator at 230. Seconds at page 2. Second Stage of Integration at 238. Sensitive at 120, Sensitive Altimeter at 56, Sensitivity at 121. And Series at 358.
Now, what's the point of this for you? An index is a map. When you're studying, you don't read a textbook cover to cover like a novel — you use the index to jump to a specific topic. If you're asked about the SAGNAC effect, you know it's on page 256, and you can go straight there. If you need to understand the difference between Schuler Period and Schuler Tuning, you see they're on different pages — 237 and 257 — so they're treated separately, and you'll need both.
Notice the structure. Main entries are listed alphabetically. Sub-entries are indented under them — like Rotor at 137, then Rotor Bearing Friction at 142 and Rotor RPM at 140 are indented, meaning they're sub-topics of Rotor. That's a standard index convention. When a topic spans multiple pages, you see multiple numbers — RTE at 273 and 274, SAT at 30 and 97. That tells you the topic is discussed in more than one place, and you may need to read both.
Also note the abbreviations. ROM — Read-Only Memory. RVR — Runway Visual Range. SATCOM — Satellite Communication. The index gives you the abbreviation and, where it's a full term, the expansion. When you see RTE DATA, that's the route data page — 286.
So when you're using this book, treat the index as your navigation tool. If you're looking for a specific instrument, a specific error, a specific system — find it here first, note the page, and go there. That's how you'll study efficiently. And when you see a term you don't recognize, like Secondary Precession or Schuler Tuning, you now know exactly where to find it — page 185 and page 257 respectively. That's the practical value of what we just looked at.
