
This is the index of the book — the alphabetical listing of topics and the page numbers where they appear. I want to walk you through what this tells you, because learning to read an index is part of learning to use your reference material properly.
Look at the entries here. You've got "Software Used in Aircraft" on page 310, "Space Gyros" on page 144, "Speed Mode" on page 394. These are all separate topics, each with its own page reference. The index is your map — when you need to find something specific, you don't flip through the whole book; you come here first.
Now, notice something important. Some entries have multiple page numbers. Take "Static" — it lists pages 13, 41, and 294. That means the concept of static appears in three different places, each time in a different context. When you see multiple page numbers like that, it tells you the topic is discussed in several sections, and you need to look at each one to get the full picture.
Also notice the sub-entries. Under "Static" you've got "Static Air Temperature" on page 30, "Static Leaks" on page 46, "Static Pressure" on page 13, "Static Source" on page 15, "Static Vent" on pages 15 and 16, and "Static Vent Plugs" on page 18. These are related but distinct concepts. Static pressure is the ambient air pressure around the aircraft — that's your reference for the altimeter and airspeed indicator. The static source is where you pick up that pressure, and the static vent is the actual opening on the fuselage. Static vent plugs are the protective covers you put over those openings when the aircraft is parked on the ground, to keep insects and moisture out. Static leaks are unwanted openings in that system that let the wrong pressure in and corrupt your readings.
Now, the index also shows you how topics relate. "Strap Down" appears on pages 253 and 257 — that's the strap-down inertial navigation system, where the gyros and accelerometers are fixed to the aircraft structure rather than mounted on a gimballed platform. And you'll see "Stable Platform" on page 234 — that's the older design where the sensors are kept level. The index lets you cross-reference these two approaches.
You'll also notice "Symbol Generator" appears with two different page references — 341 and 281 — and on page 281 it's abbreviated as "SG" or "SGs" for the plural. That's the unit that takes the raw data from the aircraft's sensors and turns it into the actual symbols you see on the electronic flight instrument display. The index tells you it's discussed in two places, so you know it's a topic worth studying twice.
One more thing to notice: "System Redundancy" on page 99. That's the principle that critical systems are duplicated — if one fails, another takes over. And "System Checks" on page 246, which is the routine testing you do to verify those systems are working. The index groups these under "System" so you can find all the related material together.
So when you're studying, use this index the way a professional does. When you're preparing for a lesson or a check, look up the topic, note all the page references, and study each one. The index is not just a list — it's a tool that shows you the structure of the whole subject and how the pieces connect.
