
This is the index of the book — the alphabetical list of topics and where to find them. So I want to walk you through what this index is telling us, because it's a map of the whole instrumentation syllabus.
Look at the entries here. We've got "Closest Point of Approach" on page 483 — that's a navigation concept, the point where two aircraft or an aircraft and an obstacle come nearest to each other. Then "CMU" on page 318 — that's the Communications Management Unit, and right below it the full name is spelled out: "Communications Management Unit." So CMU is just the abbreviation.
Then we have "CNS/ATM" on page 319 — that stands for Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Systems, and Air Traffic Management. That's the modern framework for how aircraft communicate, navigate, and are surveilled by air traffic control.
Now look at the alignment entries: "Coarse Alignment" on page 237 and "Coarse Levelling" on page 237. These are both inertial navigation system procedures — the initial rough setup before fine alignment.
"Cockpit Voice Recorder" on page 505 — that's the CVR, the device that records cockpit audio for accident investigation.
Then we have "Coefficient A," "Coefficient B," and "Coefficient C," all on page 204. These are the three compass deviation coefficients — the constants used in the compass swing correction process. And "Coefficients of Expansion" on page 26 relates to how materials expand with temperature, relevant to instrument construction.
"Coloured Arcs" on page 9 — those are the coloured speed ranges on an airspeed indicator, like the white arc for flap operating range and the green arc for normal operating range.
"Command Attitude Changes" on page 343 and "Command Speed Limiting" on page 413 — these are autopilot and flight director functions. Command attitude changes are the pilot's or autopilot's commanded pitch and roll changes; command speed limiting is the system preventing the aircraft from exceeding a commanded speed.
"Common Gimbal" on page 234 — that's the gyroscope mounting arrangement where multiple gimbals share a common axis.
"Communications Systems" on page 317 — that's the whole chapter on radio communication equipment.
"Compass Deviation" on page 119 — that's the error in the compass caused by the aircraft's own magnetic fields. "Compass Liquid" on page 122 — the damping fluid inside the compass. "Compass Needle" on page 201 — the magnetised needle itself. "Compass Requirements" on page 120 — the regulatory standards a compass must meet. "Compass Swing" on pages 122 and 201 — that's the procedure of rotating the aircraft to calibrate the compass against known headings.
"Compressibility Error" on page 44 — that's the airspeed indicator error at high Mach numbers where air compresses. "Compression" on page 30 — that's the thermodynamic process in the pitot-static system.
"Computed Information" on page 342 — that's the output of the air data computer. "Computers" on page 307 — the chapter on digital computers in aircraft.
"Conditions of Engagement" on page 359 — that's the autopilot engagement criteria. "Cone of Confusion" on page 369 — that's the area directly above a VOR station where the signal is unusable. "Configuration Module" on page 97 — that's the unit that stores the aircraft's configuration data.
So this index is telling you the full scope of what we'll cover — from compasses and gyroscopes to digital computers and CNS/ATM. Each of these entries is a topic we'll dive into in detail as we go through the book.
