Every entry you see is a technical term or topic that appears somewhere in the book, followed by the page number or numbers where you can find it.
Let's start with the first entry: Habituation. That's listed on pages 149 and 157. Habituation is a psychological concept — it refers to a decrease in response to a repeated, non-threatening stimulus. For example, if you're sitting in the cockpit and a constant engine drone continues, you stop consciously noticing it. That's habituation. It's important for pilots because it can lead to missing a change in that sound, which could be a warning.
Next, Haemoglobin on page 19. Haemoglobin is the protein molecule in your red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to your body's tissues. In aviation physiology, it's central to understanding how your body handles oxygen at altitude.

Hay Fever on page 113. That's an allergic reaction to pollen, causing symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes. For a pilot, hay fever can impair vision, cause discomfort, and affect concentration — it's a medical condition you need to report.
Head Up Display on page 276. A Head Up Display, or HUD, projects flight information onto a transparent screen in front of the pilot, so you can see the data without looking down at your instruments. It's a key piece of hardware that reduces head-down time.
Healthy Diets on page 100. This covers nutritional guidelines for maintaining energy, focus, and overall health — critical for a pilot who needs to stay alert during long flights.
Heat on page 47. This refers to the physiological effects of high temperatures on the body, such as dehydration, heat stress, and reduced performance.
Henry's Law on page 41. Henry's Law states that the amount of gas dissolved in a liquid is proportional to the partial pressure of that gas above the liquid. In aviation, this is fundamental to understanding decompression sickness — when you ascend, the reduced pressure causes nitrogen to come out of solution in your blood and tissues.
Hepatitis on pages 108 and 109. Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, usually caused by a virus. The index lists three types: Hepatitis A (page 108), Hepatitis B (page 108), and Hepatitis C (page 109). Each has different transmission routes and implications for medical certification.
High Arousal on page 125. Arousal here refers to your state of alertness and readiness. High arousal means you're very alert, possibly stressed or excited. It's part of the Yerkes-Dodson law, which relates performance to arousal level.
High Arousal overload on page 151. This is when arousal becomes too high, causing performance to degrade — you become overwhelmed, make errors, or freeze. It's a critical concept for managing stress in the cockpit.
High G-forces on page 47. G-forces are the forces of acceleration felt as multiples of Earth's gravity. High G-forces can cause blood to pool in your lower body, leading to greyout or blackout if you're not properly trained or equipped.
High Light Levels on page 80. This deals with how your eyes and vision are affected by bright light, such as glare from the sun or reflections off clouds. It's relevant to visual scanning and using sunglasses.
Holding on page 189. Holding is a standard air traffic control procedure where an aircraft flies a racetrack pattern while waiting for clearance to proceed. It's a navigation and fuel-management skill.
Homeostasis on page 123. Homeostasis is the body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment — temperature, fluid balance, blood pressure — despite external changes. It's the foundation of how your body copes with flight stressors.
Hot or Cold Sensations on page 48. This covers how your body perceives and responds to temperature extremes, which can affect comfort, concentration, and even safety.
Human Reliability on page 159. This is the study of how likely a human is to perform a task correctly under given conditions. In aviation, it's about understanding and reducing human error.
Hydrophobia on page 110. Hydrophobia is an intense fear of water. For a pilot, this could be a psychological issue if you ever need to ditch or evacuate over water.
Hydrostatic variation on page 91. Hydrostatic variation refers to changes in pressure due to the weight of a column of fluid — in the body, this explains why blood pressure is different in your head versus your feet when you're upright or in a G-force environment.
Hyoscine on page 68. Hyoscine is a medication used to prevent motion sickness. It's relevant because pilots need to know which drugs are safe to take and which can impair performance.
Hypertension on page 27. Hypertension is high blood pressure. It's a medical condition that can affect your fitness to fly and requires monitoring and possibly treatment.
Hypertext on page 257. Hypertext is a digital system of linked text — like clicking a link in an online manual. It's a reference to how the material might be presented electronically.
Hypoglycaemia on page 100. Hypoglycaemia is low blood sugar. It can cause symptoms like confusion, weakness, and loss of consciousness — a serious risk for a pilot if you haven't eaten properly.
Hypotension on page 28. Hypotension is low blood pressure. It can cause dizziness or fainting, especially when you stand up quickly, which is a concern during flight.
Finally, Hypovigilance — the entry is cut off, but hypovigilance means a reduced state of alertness or watchfulness. It's the opposite of hypervigilance and can lead to missing important cues or falling into a trance-like state during long, monotonous phases of flight.
