
This is the index of the book — the alphabetical list of topics with their page numbers. I want to walk you through how to read this, because it's your map for the whole Powerplant volume.
Look at the structure. Each entry has the topic name, then a dotted line, then a page number. The dots are just leaders — they guide your eye from the topic to the page. The page numbers tell you where in the book that subject is covered.
Let me read you some of the entries so you get a feel for the range of material. Under A, we have "Atmosphere Exclusion" at page 369, "Attack of a Compressor" at 230, "Automatic Boost Control Unit (ABC)" at 146, "Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)" at 351, "Auxiliary Starting Devices" at 69, "AVGAS" at 77, "AVGAS 100LL" at 77, and "Axial Velocity of the Airflow" at 229.
Notice the acronyms. ABC stands for Automatic Boost Control Unit — that's a device that manages the boost pressure in a supercharged or turbocharged engine. APU stands for Auxiliary Power Unit — that's a small engine used to provide power on the ground when the main engines are off. AVGAS is aviation gasoline, and AVGAS 100LL is a specific grade — the 100 is the octane rating, and LL stands for low lead.
Under B, we have "Baffles" at page 60 — those are the metal plates that direct cooling air over an engine's cylinders. "Bernoulli's Theorem" at page 5 — that's the principle that relates pressure and velocity in a fluid, and it's fundamental to how wings and propellers generate lift. "Beta" at 168, "Beta (Ground) Range" at 168, and "Beta Range Operation" at 180 — these all relate to propeller blade angle control, where beta is the range of blade angles used on the ground for reverse thrust and taxiing.
Then we have "Big End" at 26 — that's the lower end of a connecting rod that attaches to the crankshaft. "Blade 'Butt'" at 163, "Blade Geometry" at 163, "Blade 'Shank'" at 163, "Blade Terminology" at 164, and "Blade Twist" at 166 — these are all about propeller blade design. The butt is the root end of the blade where it attaches to the hub, the shank is the portion of the blade nearest the hub, and twist refers to the change in blade angle from root to tip to maintain an efficient angle of attack along the whole blade.
"Bleed Air and Its Uses" is at 391 — that's the compressed air tapped off a gas turbine engine for things like cabin pressurization and de-icing. "Block" at 27 is the engine block, the main structural housing of the cylinders. "Blowout Cycle" at 358 relates to flame stability in a combustion chamber. "Blue Smoke" at 27 is an exhaust indication — blue smoke from a piston engine typically indicates oil burning. "Boiling" at 369 relates to fuel or coolant behavior at altitude. "Boost Pressure" at 137 is the pressure above atmospheric in the intake manifold of a supercharged engine. "Bootstrapping" at 140 is a phenomenon in turbocharger operation. "Bore" at 14 is the diameter of a cylinder. "Bottom Dead Centre (BDC)" at 14 is the lowest position of the piston in the cylinder. "Boyle's Law" at 7 is the gas law relating pressure and volume at constant temperature. And "Brake Horsepower" is the actual power delivered at the output shaft, measured by a brake or dynamometer.
So this index tells you the whole scope of the Powerplant volume — from the basic gas laws and engine geometry at the front, through supercharging and propeller theory in the middle, to gas turbine accessories and the APU at the back.
