This is the index of the book — the alphabetical listing of topics and the page numbers where they appear. So what I want to walk you through is how to read and use this index, because it's a tool you'll rely on constantly during your training. Look at the entries here. You'll see "PERF INIT" — that's the performance initialization page on the FMS, and it appears on pages 273 and 274. Then "Performance" on page 272, "Periodic" on page 326, "Permanent Memory" on page 309. Notice how the index lists the exact page numbers for each topic. Now, here's something important: the index is organized alphabetically, and you'll see some entries have multiple page numbers. For example, "PFD" — that's the Primary Flight Display — appears on pages 266 and 281. When you see multiple numbers like that, it means the topic is discussed in several places, and you need to check each one for the full picture. Let me point out some key entries you'll encounter. "PFD Flight Mode Annunciators (FMA)" on page 341 — that's the annunciators that show you which autopilot and autothrottle modes are engaged. "Phase Advance" on page 405, "Phase Detected" on page 218 — these are terms from the gyroscope and instrument chapters. Now look at the Pitot entries — this is a cluster you'll see a lot. "Pitot" on pages 13 and 41, "Pitot and Static Blockages" on page 45, "Pitot and Static Heaters" on page 18, "Pitot Covers" on page 18, "Pitot Head" on pages 13 and 45, "Pitot Leaks" on page 46, "Pitot Pressure" on page 13, "Pitot/Static Heads" on page 13, and "Pitot Tube" on pages 13 and 14. The Pitot tube is the pressure probe that measures ram air pressure for your airspeed indicator — and you'll see it's a recurring theme because blockages, leaks, and heating are all critical operational concerns. You'll also see "Pitch Attitude" on page 416, "Pitch Channel" on pages 337 and 364, "Pitch Error" on page 174 — these are all from the autopilot and flight director chapters. And "Pivot" on page 120 — that's from the gyroscope section, referring to the pivot point of a gyro. Finally, notice "PLAN" on pages 286, 288, and 294, and "Plan Mode" — that's the navigation display mode where you see your route from above, like a map. And "Placard Limit Reversion" on page 414 — that's a flight envelope protection feature. So the way you use this index is simple: you look up a topic alphabetically, note the page numbers, and go to those pages. When you see multiple page numbers, check them all — the topic is covered in different contexts across those pages. This is your roadmap through the entire book, and knowing how to navigate it efficiently will save you time throughout your course.
