This is the index of the book — the alphabetical list of topics and the page numbers where they appear. So what I want to walk you through is how to read this thing, because it's a map of the entire syllabus. Look at the entries here. We've got "PERF INIT" — that's the performance initialization page, where you set up the aircraft's performance data before takeoff. It appears on pages 273 and 274. Then "Performance" on page 272, "Periodic" on 326, "Permanent Memory" on 309 — that's the non-volatile memory that stores data even when power is removed. Now "PFD" — that's the Primary Flight Display, the main electronic flight instrument screen. It's on pages 266 and 281. And right below it, "PFD Flight Mode Annunciators (FMA)" on page 341 — those are the little flags on the PFD that tell you which autopilot or autothrottle modes are engaged. Then we have "Phase Advance" on 405 and "Phase Detected" on 218 — these are about signal processing, how a system detects and advances the phase of an alternating signal. "Piezo Electric Dither Motor" on 257 — that's a small motor that vibrates to reduce friction in a gyroscopic instrument. "Pints" on page 2 — that's a unit of volume, probably for a fuel quantity gauge. "Pipelines" on 17 — that's about the plumbing of the pitot-static system. Now here's the big cluster: "Pitot" on pages 13 and 41. "Pitot and Static Blockages" on 45. "Pitot and Static Heaters" on 18. "Pitot Covers" on 18. "Pitot Head" on 13 and 45. "Pitot Leaks" on 46. "Pitot Pressure" on 13. "Pitot/Static Heads" on 13. "Pitot Tube" on 13 and 14. So the pitot tube is the forward-facing probe that measures ram air pressure — the pressure of the air being pushed into it as the aircraft moves. That's pitot pressure. The static ports measure the ambient atmospheric pressure. Together they feed the airspeed indicator, altimeter, and vertical speed indicator. Blockages, leaks, and heaters are all about keeping that system accurate and ice-free. Then "Pivot" on 120 — that's the hinge point of a moving part, like in a gyroscope. "Placard Limit Reversion" on 414 — that's when the flight director reverts to the placarded speed limits. "PLAN" on pages 286, 288, and 294 — that's the plan mode on the navigation display, showing the route as a map. And "Plan Mode" — that's the same thing, the display mode where you see the flight plan. So the whole point of this index is: when you're studying, you can look up any term and jump straight to the page where it's explained. It's your roadmap through the entire instrumentation syllabus.
