You'll notice the entries are grouped alphabetically, starting with "Turning Errors" and "Two Levelling Switches" under T, then moving into U, and finally V. Each entry has page numbers after it — those are the pages where that topic is discussed in the book.
Let me highlight some of the key terms you'll encounter in your instrumentation studies. Under U, you have "UHF" — that's Ultra High Frequency, a radio frequency band used in aviation communications, and it appears on pages 264 and 317. Then "ULD" — that's the Unit Load Device, used in cargo loading, on pages 497 and 505. And "Underwater Locating Device" — that's the emergency beacon that helps locate the flight recorder after an accident, also on pages 497 and 505.
You'll also see "Unbalanced" on page 188 — that relates to gyroscope behaviour when forces aren't equal. "Unbounded" and "Unbounded Errors" on page 238 — those are errors that grow without limit, which is important when you study inertial navigation systems. "Under-read" on page 132 — that's when an instrument shows a value lower than the true value, which you'll see with airspeed indicators in certain conditions. "Undershoot" and "Undershooting" on page 128 — that's when the aircraft doesn't reach the desired value, like when you're levelling off from a climb.
Now moving to V — you have "Vertical Card Compass" on page 119, which is a type of magnetic compass with a vertical display card. "Vertical Gyro" on page 341 and "Vertical Gyro Unit" on page 178 — that's the gyroscopic instrument that measures aircraft attitude relative to the horizon. "Vertically Axised Data Generation Unit" on page 178 — that's another name for the vertical gyro unit, describing how it generates attitude data around the vertical axis.
You'll also see "Vertical Speed Indicator" — abbreviated VSI on page 73, and the "Instantaneous Vertical Speed Indicator" or IVSI on page 75. The VSI shows your rate of climb or descent in feet per minute. The IVSI is the faster-responding version. "Vertical Speed" or V/S on page 371 relates to the autopilot's vertical speed mode. "Vertical Navigation Mode" or V NAV on page 371 — that's the autopilot mode that follows a programmed vertical flight path.
You'll also notice "Varying Rotor Speed" and "Underspeeding" on page 186 — those relate to rotorcraft and engine governor behaviour. "Venturi Tube" on page 172 — that's the tube that creates a pressure difference to drive certain instruments. "Unstable Rotor rpm" on page 163 — that's when rotor speed fluctuates, which you'd see in certain failure conditions.
And "UNABLE NEXT ALT" on page 274 — that's a flight management system message telling the crew they can't reach the next assigned altitude. "Uplink" on page 318 — that's data sent from the ground to the aircraft. "Useful Abbreviations" on page 329 — that's a reference list of common abbreviations.
This index is your map. When you're studying a topic, you can look it up here, find the page, and go straight to it. It also shows you which topics are related — for example, you can see that vertical gyro information appears on both page 178 and page 341, so you know the topic is covered in more than one place.
Now, I want to point out the figures I have available for you. There's Figure 13.10 showing the Electric Horizon Control System on page 183, and Figure 13.11 showing the Vertical Gyro Unit on page 185.
