This is the index of the Oxford ATPL Instrumentation book — the alphabetical listing of every topic and the page where it appears. I want to walk you through what this index is telling you, because learning to read an index is part of learning how to use your reference material. Look at the structure. Each entry has a term on the left and page numbers on the right. When you see multiple page numbers separated by commas, that means the term appears in several places throughout the book. When you see a range like "13, 41" for Dynamic Pressure, that means it's discussed on both page 13 and page 41 — not continuously, but in two separate locations. Let me point out some of the key entries you'll encounter. EADI stands for Electronic Attitude Director Indicator — that's the primary flight display showing pitch and roll attitude. It appears on pages 266, 281, 283, and 286. EHSI is the Electronic Horizontal Situation Indicator — the navigation display showing your position relative to the flight plan. That's on pages 281, 283, and 294. EFIS is the Electronic Flight Instrument System — the overall system that generates both the EADI and EHSI displays. It's on pages 281 and 288. ECAM is the Electronic Centralised Aircraft Monitor — that's the Airbus system that displays engine and system warnings. EICAS is the Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System — the Boeing equivalent. Both appear on page 282. Now look at the gyroscope entries. Earth Gyro appears on pages 145 and 169. Earth Rate is on pages 142 and 235. Earth Rotation is on page 257. These are all related — the Earth's rotation affects gyroscopic instruments, and you'll need to understand how that creates apparent drift in your heading indicator. Electric Gyros on page 145 and Electric Artificial Horizon on page 177 — these are the electrically-driven versions of the vacuum-driven instruments. EGPWS is the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System on page 467 — that's the terrain awareness system that warns you if you're too close to the ground. You'll also see E Bar on page 59 — that's the command bar on an attitude indicator that shows you where to pitch. EAS is Equivalent Airspeed on page 44 — that's calibrated airspeed corrected for compressibility. EEPROM on page 309 is Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory — that's the non-volatile storage used in modern instruments. DRMC on page 204 is the Distance Measuring Computer. Dutch Roll on page 403 is that oscillating motion where the aircraft yaws and rolls alternately — and the Dutch Roll Filter on page 405 is the system that damps it out. Dual FDS on page 348 refers to dual Flight Director Systems. Dual Mode on page 272 is a flight director operating mode. Dynamic on page 41 and DYNAMIC on page 13 — note the capitalisation difference. DYNAMIC on page 13 relates to Dynamic Pressure, which is the pressure caused by the aircraft's motion through the air, and it's fundamental to airspeed measurement. Dynamic on page 41 is a different context — that's about the dynamic response of an instrument. Earth Orientation on page 235 and Earth's Gravity on page 169 — these are the physical references your gyroscopic and inertial systems use to determine attitude and position. Economy Cruise Mode on page 275 is an autopilot or autothrottle setting that optimises fuel burn. Effective Radius on page 140 relates to the turning radius of the aircraft. So this index is your map. When you're studying a specific topic, you look up the term, find all the pages where it's discussed, and you know exactly where to go. The page numbers tell you the depth of coverage — a single page means a brief mention, multiple pages mean a thorough treatment. This is how you navigate the entire book efficiently.
