Let me show you Example 2. On a chart of scale 1 over 5,000,000, how many nautical miles on the Earth are represented by 1.7 centimetres?
We start with RF equals CL over ED. So 1 over 5,000,000 equals 1.7 centimetres over ED. Rearranging, ED equals 1.7 times 5,000,000, divided by 1852 times 100. Why 1852 times 100? Because we need to convert centimetres to nautical miles. There are 1852 metres in a nautical mile, and 100 centimetres in a metre, so that conversion factor gets the Earth Distance into nautical miles. You work that through on your calculator and you get your answer.
So the key takeaway: one equation, RF equals CL over ED, handles all simple scale problems. Just keep your units consistent, and you're set.
