Maximum Structural Take-off Mass (MSTOM) on page 26 — the heaviest it may be at the start of the take-off roll. Maximum Structural Taxi Mass on page 31 — the limit for moving on the ground under its own power. Maximum Taxi Mass (MTM) on page 26 — same idea, the maximum for taxiing. And Maximum Zero Fuel Mass (MZFM) on pages 26 and 31 — that's the maximum weight of the aircraft with all payload loaded but before any fuel is added, protecting the wing structure from bending loads.
Then Medium Range Jet Twin (MRJT1) on page 60 — that's the example aircraft type used throughout this book for worked examples. Minimum Equipment List on page 35 — the MEL, the list of equipment that may be inoperative and still allow dispatch. And MOMENT on page 34, in capitals — the product of mass and its distance from a reference point, which is how we calculate the centre of gravity. Finally, Movement of CG in Flight on page 28 — how the centre of gravity shifts during flight as fuel is burned.
Moving to O. Operating Mass on page 31 — that's the basic aircraft mass plus crew and their baggage, ready for operation but without payload or fuel. Operations Manual on page 25 — the document that contains the approved procedures and limits for the aircraft. And Out of Limit CG Position on page 26 — the condition where the centre of gravity falls outside the certified envelope, which is not allowed for flight.
Now P. Palletized Cargo on page 56 — cargo loaded on pallets for efficient handling. Passenger Classification on page 3 — how passengers are categorised, typically by age or class. Passengers on page 71 — the people carried, each with a standard mass value. Passenger Service Equipment on page 34 — the galley equipment, trolleys, and other items used to serve passengers, which have their own mass values.
Then we have the abbreviations: Pax on page 71 — that's short for passengers. Pax C, Pax F, and Pax Y on page 71 — these are the class codes: C for business class, F for first class, and Y for economy class. Each class has its own standard passenger mass because of different seating and service standards.
Payload on page 31 — the mass of passengers, baggage, and cargo that generates revenue. Performance on page 26 — how the aircraft's capabilities, like take-off distance and climb rate, are affected by mass and balance. And Pounds on page 36 — the imperial unit of mass, alongside kilograms.
Finally, Q. Quantity Mass Conversion Chart — that's a chart you use to convert a volume of fuel, measured in litres or gallons, into a mass in kilograms or pounds, because fuel is loaded by volume but calculated by mass.
