I'll read you the key terms, and I'll explain what each one means so you have a solid foundation before we dive into the actual chapters.
Let's begin with the letter A. We have Additional Fuel on page 65, and Alternate (Diversion) Fuel on page 65 as well. These are two distinct fuel types you'll need to know. Additional fuel is extra fuel you might carry beyond the required trip fuel, while alternate fuel is the fuel specifically required to fly from your destination to an alternate airport if you can't land there. Both are critical for your fuel planning.
Next, Area Load Limitations on page 58. This refers to the maximum weight a specific floor area of the aircraft can support, like the cargo compartment floor. Then we have ARM on page 34, which is an abbreviation you'll see constantly. ARM stands for Balance Arm — it's the distance from a reference datum to the centre of gravity of an item. We'll get into that in detail later.
Moving to B. Baggage on page 71, and Balance Arm on page 30 — that's the full term for ARM. Basic Empty Mass on page 31 is a crucial one: it's the mass of the aircraft including all fixed equipment, unusable fuel, and all fluids like oil and hydraulic fluid, but excluding payload and usable fuel. Block Mass on page 31 is the total mass of the aircraft at the start of the taxi, including everything — the basic empty mass, all payload, all fuel, and the crew. Body Station on page 60 is a specific location along the fuselage, measured in inches or millimetres from a reference point, used to define where things are positioned. And Bulk Cargo on page 56 is cargo loaded loosely into a compartment, not in containers or on pallets.
Now the C section. There's a simple C on page 71 — that's likely a reference to a specific item in a table, we'll see it when we get there. Calculating the Underload Using the Formulae on page 64 and Calculating the Underload Using the Load and Trim Sheet on page 66 — these are two methods you'll learn to find how much extra load you can carry. The underload is the difference between the maximum allowable take-off mass and your actual take-off mass. Calculation of Fuel Mass on page 36 is about converting fuel volume to mass, which you'll need because fuel is often measured in litres or US gallons, but you need it in kilograms. Calculation of the Basic Empty Mass and CG Position on page 39 — this is how you determine the aircraft's empty mass and where its centre of gravity is when it's empty. Calculation of the Loaded Mass and CG Position for Large Aircraft on page 63 — that's for bigger aeroplanes where you have many items to account for. Calculations (MRJT1) on page 64 refers to a specific aircraft type, the Medium Range Jet Transport 1, used as an example throughout the book. CAP 696 on page 29 is a Civil Aviation Publication — a regulatory document you'll reference. Cargo on page 71, Cargo Compartments on page 56, Cargo Handling on page 56, and Cargo Handling Systems on page 56 — these all relate to how freight is stored and moved in the aircraft. Finally, Centre of Gravity (CG) on pages 26 and 29 — this is the point where the entire mass of the aircraft is considered to be concentrated. Centre of Gravity Limits on page 29 are the forward and aft boundaries within which the CG must lie for safe flight. And we have CG ON AFT LIMIT — that's a condition where the centre of gravity is at its rearmost allowable position, which affects stability and control.
